JOB SUMMARY

The Med/Surg Nurse Manager is responsible for planning and coordinating patient care activities while leading employees to provide appropriate clinical care and an excellent patient experience.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer and within the framework of objective and policies established by Citizens Medical Center, the Nurse Manager will plan, direct, and coordinate appropriate nursing care for a medical/surgical unit. The Med/Surg Nurse Manager is responsible for planning and coordinating patient care activities while leading employees to provide appropriate clinical care and an excellent patient experience.

Job Specific

  • Provides direct quality patient care based on the plan of care and exercises judgment in delegating aspects of patient care appropriately to licensed and unlicensed staff members. (EF)
  • Participates in professional development of self and staff to enhance patient-focused nursing practice, age, and population-specific to the nursing unit.
  • Performs a timely, comprehensive assessment using appropriate techniques for data collection, analysis, interpretation, and documentation to make age-appropriate decisions for the patient plan of care within scope of responsibility, training, and practice. (EF)
  • Develops, implements, documents, and evaluates on a regular basis the plan of care in collaboration with other team members based on multidisciplinary assessments.
  • Actively participates in unit's performance improvement initiatives. (EF)
  • Responsible for planning and recommending unit budget.
  • Performs nursing interventions with emphasis on patient rights, informed consent, patient confidentially, HIPAA compliance, adaptation of care according to age, cultural and ethical considerations. (EF)
  • Administers medication according to facility standards and demonstrates safe and accurate administration of medication/control substances.
  • Screens for and communicates discharge needs on a regular basis in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team members.
  • Accurately observes, documents, and reports patient's vital signs, intake and output and other physical observations on the appropriate forms.
  • Evaluates the need for and consistently provides and documents education provided to the patient and/or patient care givers.
  • Evaluates with the physician or independent allied health professional the need to initiate restraints, monitors use of restraints, and evaluates on a regular basis according to hospital policy the ability to discontinue restraints.
  • Monitors appropriate pain management and performs interventions.
  • Obtains physician orders to meet the needs of the patient and performs patient care activities; assisting with ADLs, mobilization of patients, drain, dressing, wound care, associated therapeutic devices and nutritional needs.
  • Participates in safety management and infection control programs (EF).
  • Uses knowledge of the staffing plan, skill mix/staff competencies, and patient acuity to develop an appropriate shift assignment. (EF)
  • Responsible for staffing operations including personnel recruitment, retention, orientation, education, evaluation, promotion, and termination within unit. (EF).
  • Coordinates with other disciplines and departments, the process of admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Uses effective leadership and organizational skills for problem solving; mentoring and directing staff; and reporting issues on a timely basis to physicians, assistant directors of nursing and/or other department leaders or their representatives. (EF)

  • Adheres to organization-wide and other applicable policies and procedures.
  • Day-to-day performance complies with the hospital's Service Excellence Behavioral Expectations.
  • Performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital's Ethics, Compliance and Confidentiality Program guidelines.
  • Performs within professional Scope of Practice at all times.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Required: Graduate of accredited college, university, or school of nursing *Stroke In-service annually

Preferred: BSN or MSN preferred.

Experience

Required: Five (5) years of nursing experience and three to five (3-5) years of supervisory experience

Preferred: Previous management experience, previous medical/surgical RN experience

Special Skills And Abilities

Required: Demonstrates strong clinical and communication skills.

Preferred: Effective leadership, management, problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Licensure / Certification Requirements

Required: Current license or permit to practice as a Registered Nurse in State of Texas; CPR; Stroke Certification 90 days from date of hire *ACLS recert biannually for 2South and ICU
