Job description

Summary

The Nurse Manager (NM) is the designated first-line supervisory authority responsible for the 24/7 operation of the Spinal Cord Injuries/Disability - Inpatient Unit. The NM provides coverage for other NMs as needed and functions as a clinical expert within their area of expertise/unit.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • English Language Proficiency
  • Graduation from a school of professional nursing approved by an accrediting agency such as ACEN or CCNE at the time the program was completed.
  • For individuals in a master's level bridge program in nursing, completion of coursework equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Nursing is required; licensure must be obtained prior to appointment.
  • Foreign graduates must possess a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
  • Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception: Candidates without licensure may be appointed temporarily while pursuing licensure.

Physical Requirements: Visual acuity, keen hearing, manual dexterity, ability to perform long periods of walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. May be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials, and may need to don protective clothing.

Duties
  • Function as a clinical expert, responsible for all elements of the nursing process in patient care.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care based on age-specific components.
  • Coordinate care focusing on patient education, self-management, and satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to improve care outcomes and develop innovative initiatives.
  • Serve as first-line supervisor, ensuring 24/7 operations and providing staff training and evaluation.
  • Lead and mentor staff, promote evidence-based practices, and ensure compliance with standards.
  • Engage in professional development and organizational strategy planning.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance and foster a safe, inclusive, and professional environment.
  • Participate in activities to promote an evidence-based practice culture.

Preferred Experience: Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders, Medical/Surgical, VA supervisory experience.
