Job summary

The Virginia Military Institute Infirmary seeks a Nurse Manager to supervise seven RNs across 4-day and 3-night shifts in a fast-paced, 24/7 student health clinic serving about 1,700 cadets. You will oversee scheduling, annual evaluations, and clinical operations, ensuring accurate documentation and OSHA compliance while coordinating pharmacy and lab activities.

Job description

The Nurse Manager supervises the shift nurses and performs their yearly assessment evaluations. Monitors and reviews medical records to ensure cadets receive optimal care and services from the nursing staff and to check completeness, timeliness, and accuracy of documentation. Determines yearly nursing schedule. Maintains clinical manuals. Monitors compliance with regulations and protocols, including OSHA. Coordinates schedule changes and coverage for nursing staff.

Responsible for maintaining pharmacy inventory and ensuring records meet Virginia State Board of Pharmacy regulations under the guidance of the Institute Physician. Reports controlled substances dispensed to state database daily. Monitors and maintains stat box medications and records. Monitors accuracy of shift change narcotics count. Maintains adequate supplies/inventory for current school year. Keeps inventory records andperforms an end-of-year FIFO count in preparation for a state inspection.

Orders and maintains supplies for daily lab draws and specialty projects. Reviews and updates lab codes and billing information. Reviews lab invoices to ensure accuracy of lab changes. Submits charges to student accounting bi-monthly. Follows up with labs when needed for accuracy of billing data.

Assists nurses and providers triaging and treating cadets, including lab draws and caring for inpatients. Schedules radiology and off-post appointments, verifies insurance, obtains pre-authorizations, and coordinates transportation. Other responsibilities include organizing flu clinics, lab testing for NCAA athletes, and coordination of lab testing for the ROTC Department, and other jobs as assigned by the Institute Physician.

Minimum Qualifications

The VMI Infirmary is the first point of contact for cadets seeking health care and plays a crucial role in promoting health, preventing diseases, and managing chronic conditions. The nurse administrator is an RN who provides oversight and supervisory duties for 7 RNs (4-day shift and 3-nightshift) in a fast-paced, 24/7 student health clinic for approximately 1,700 students.

In addition to supervisory work, during the academic year the nurse administrator also provides clinical support to the Infirmary along with the other RNs as needed to include conducting initial patient assessments, monitoring changes in condition, communicating with medical providers as needed, administering medications, and providing treatments.

During the summer months, the nurse administrator is the sole nurse on duty 5 days/week. The nurse administrator does full-spectrum management of the nurses to include hiring and training nursing staff, making the nursing schedule, annual evaluations, etc. The nurse administrator oversees daily clinic operations (including scheduling outside appointments, ensuring compliance with OSHA regs, maintaining the pharmacy inventory and supplies, etc.) and ensuring patient care standards are met.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be comfortable working independently within the scope of RN licensure.
  • Must be proficient in computer skills (email, use of EMR, etc.).
  • Requires graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Excellent nursing assessment and communication skills.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Comfortable in urgent nursing care of adolescent patients.
  • Active and Unrestricted RN License in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
