The Nurse Lead Adult Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) is a swing-shift position. Serves as lead nurse and provides supervision for Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) working within the CSU environment. Also serves as a member of the sub-acute CSU multidisciplinary team responsible for conducting psychiatric assessments; assessing physical needs; making appropriate referrals to community physicians; providing management and administration of medication in conjunction with the psychiatrist, providing a range of treatment, rehabilitation, and support services; and sharing shift-management responsibility with other staff. These services are provided in a subacute environment that provides residential crisis stabilization as well as medically managed withdrawal services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide initial and ongoing face to face and/or telemedicine assessments to individuals referred to the CSU and provide input to Program Manager.
- Document client progress to maintain a permanent record of client activity according to established methods and procedures.
- Participate in staff organizational meetings and treatment planning review meetings. Organize and lead meetings for the CSU nurses as well as attend meetings held by MRCS Director of Nursing.
- Take the lead role or participate in providing medication administration and medical services.
- Under the direction of the team prescriber and in collaboration with other nurses on the team, develop, revise, maintain, and supervise team psychopharmacologic and medical treatment and medication policies and procedures including transcribing, administering, evaluating, and recording psychotropic medications prescribed by the team prescriber; evaluate and chart psychotropic medication effectiveness, complications, and side effects; and arrange for required lab work according to protocol. Under the direction of the team prescriber and in collaboration with other registered nurses on the team, organize and manage a system of getting medication to clients and integrating medication administration into clients’ individual treatment plans. Under the direction of the team prescriber and in collaboration with other registered nurses on the team, manage pharmaceuticals and medical supplies. In collaboration with the team prescriber, coordinate, schedule, and administer medical assessments of client physical health, making appropriate referrals to community physicians for further assessment and treatment, and coordinate psychiatric treatment with medical treatment.
- Provide ongoing assessment of clients' symptoms and response to treatment. Make appropriate changes in treatment plans as necessary to ensure immediate and appropriate interventions are provided in response to changes in mental status or behavior which puts clients at risk (e.g., suicidal).
- Provide symptom education to enable clients to identify their mental illness symptoms.
- Provide individual and group treatment within the crisis stabilization unit in a model that is non-confrontational, considers interactions of mental illness and substance abuse, and has client-determined goals.
- Work in coordination with Program Manager and Administration to ensure the completion of any education opportunities required for continued licensure through the Board of Nursing for nursing staff
- Provide monthly supervision with each nursing staff member to serve as a means of support for each nursing employee.
- Monitor input of data from nursing staff to ensure that Electronic Health Record (EHR) protocols are being completed in a thorough fashion. Educate RN/LPN staff on any changes that should arise within the EHR system from a nursing perspective.
- Coordinate with Program Manager and the office of Human Resources to train new staff as they are hired and ensure that job duties are completed thoroughly and accurately.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Provide direct clinical services to clients on an individual, group, and family basis in the office and in community settings to teach behavioral symptom-management techniques to alleviate and manage symptoms not reduced by medication, and promote personal growth and development by assisting clients to adapt to and cope with internal and external stresses.
- Provide nutrition education, along with meal planning, grocery shopping, and food preparation information.
- Assist and support clients to have and effectively use a personal primary care physician, dentist, and other medical specialists as required.
- Perform such other duties as assigned by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Extensive knowledge of psychiatric disorders and substance abuse disorders.
- Experience with detox and substance use service provision.
- Knowledge of broad range of treatment modalities.
- Knowledge of personality and /or behavior theory.
- Skill in recording, interviewing, assessing, decision making, and treatment planning.
- Knowledge of psychotropic and medication assisted treatment medications, indications, and contraindications.
- Skill in providing sound judgment in carrying out procedures and methods.
- Ability to demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skill and maintaining a calm and effective work environment.
- Exhibit supervisory skills.
- Ability to train others one on one and in group settings.
Must meet Board of Health Professions registration requirements for QMHP (A or C or A-Trainee or C-Trainee).
Graduate in nursing from an accredited college/university with Boards (Virginia or multi-state) within ninety (90) days of graduation. Bachelor’s or Master of Science in Nursing is preferred with one year of work experience in a psychiatric setting (inpatient or community).
Valid driver’s license and in good standing.
