Job Overview
The Nurse III House Supervisor is responsible for the after‑hours operation of campus‑based nursing services at Kerrville State Hospital. The role includes supervising staff, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, coordinating with hospital leadership, and providing quality patient care during non‑traditional hours. Responsibilities
- Coordinate the after‑hours operation of campus‑based nursing services and ensure quality patient care.
- Make hospital rounds, promote nursing visibility, and assess unit operations to maintain policy compliance.
- Assist after‑hours nursing staff in creating a safe and therapeutic environment.
- Ensure compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, CMS conditions of participation, Texas Administrative Code (TAC), Texas Board of Nursing, and the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
- Prepare daily house supervisor's reports for official record and dissemination to hospital leadership.
- Implement program‑specific staffing plans, providing leadership to ensure timely and accurate staffing summaries.
- Provide Clinical RN unit coverage as needed and administer medication, treatment, assessment, and patient monitoring.
- Serve as on‑site subject matter expert and consultant to all clinical and administrative staff, collaborating with AOD, MOD, CNE, ACNE, and Nurse Managers.
- Act as the point of contact for external customers, coordinating requests and facilitating interviews with staff and patients.
- Coordinate smooth admission process during non‑traditional hours, conducting triage and assessment of patients and communicating with the Mental Health Authority and other stakeholders.
- Serve as Administrative Nurse designee during disasters and emergencies, coordinating emergency drills and acting as Incident Commander for after‑hours events.
- Participate in the Nursing Clinical Operations Team and other hospital committees, focusing on problem solving and performance improvement.
- Engage in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement activities, including rounds, audits, and medical record reviews.
Essential Job Functions
- Attend work on a regular basis and work specific shift schedules, including rotating or overtime schedules as required.
- Coordinate the after‑hours operation of campus‑based nursing services and the delivery of quality patient care.
- Implement program‑specific staffing plans and provide Clinical RN coverage as needed.
- Serve as the on‑site subject matter expert and consultant, collaborating with leadership for coordinated care.
- Act as the point of contact for external customers and coordinate investigations or requests as required.
- Coordinate a smooth admission process during non‑traditional work hours.
- Serve as Administrative Nurse designee during disasters and emergencies.
- Participate in the Nursing Clinical Operations Team and other hospital committees and workgroups.
- Engage in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement activities.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
- Knowledge of state and federal laws for individuals with mental health issues, regulatory policies, and state hospital procedures.
- Knowledge of Texas Board of Nursing laws, regulations, and the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
- Ability to assess and care for residents and/or staff members in emergency situations (CPR, etc.).
- Knowledge of nursing care standards, settlement agreements, and healthcare guidelines.
- Skill in supervising employees, analyzing problems, formulating and implementing change plans.
- Knowledge of nursing treatment tools, equipment, and electronic health record systems.
- Time‑management, prioritization, and effective communication skills.
- Ability to train all levels of staff, interpret regulations, and develop policies and procedures.
- Ability to evaluate services, identify trends, and develop improvement plans.
Registrations, Licensure & Certifications
- Licensed registered nurse (RN) in the State of Texas or a state participating in the Nurse Licensure Compact.
- Valid Texas driver license (or obtainable within 90 days of hire) if transporting patients.
Initial Screening Criteria
- Graduation from a nursing program accredited by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.
- At least three (3) years of work experience as an RN in a recognized health agency or hospital.
Additional Information
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, and the List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). All candidates must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state‑operated facility; applicants for certain centers may need to be 21 years of age. Compliance with HHSC immunization policy is required. Candidates who are not vaccinated for influenza may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
