Brief Job Description:

Nurse II (PRN Nurse) performs complex (journey level) nursing work under the direct supervision of the Assistant Chief Nurse Executive (CNE). Responsibilities include providing routine care and treatment through the application of the nursing process, maintaining nursing standards of practice, and ensuring adequate staffing according to the program specific staffing plan. This role involves collaboration with other shift RNs to ensure 24-hour continuity of care, modeling a proactive approach to unit management, and overseeing work assigned to other staff. The PRN Nurse works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs):

  1. Attends work on a regular basis and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime.
  2. Performs extensive initial and ongoing assessments of the patient's nursing care needs.
  3. Collaborates with other health care professionals to develop a multidisciplinary recovery plan.
  4. Evaluates the outcomes of nursing interventions and documents them in the medical record.
  5. Provides comprehensive patient/family education regarding illness processes and medications.
  6. Establishes, monitors, and maintains the therapeutic milieu through clinical oversight and training of other nursing staff.
  7. Supervises the administration of medications and ensures compliance with nursing care standards.
  8. Acts as team leader in emergency situations.
  9. Serves as the contact RN ensuring adequate staffing for assigned shifts.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

  1. Knowledge of Texas Nurse Practice Act and professional nursing standards.
  2. Knowledge of HHSC policies and procedures.
  3. Strong coaching skills and ability to provide patient care.
  4. Ability to manage time effectively and intervene therapeutically with patients.

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:

Must be licensed as a registered nurse by the State of Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.

If transporting patients, must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date.

Initial Screening Criteria:

At least one (1) year of work experience as an RN in a recognized health agency, hospital, or health care facility.

Additional Information:

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks. Compliance with HHSC immunization policy is required.
