Job summary

Medical City Frisco, part of the HCA Healthcare network, is seeking a Nurse Extern PRN Float Pool to join its nursing team. You will gain hands-on experience while caring for patients under supervision, advancing toward RN responsibilities as you progress through your nursing program.

You will collaborate with the nursing staff to deliver safe, compassionate care, perform basic procedures, and participate in care planning and patient education.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in an ADN or BSN program and pursuing RN extern experience.
• BCLS required within 30 days of start date.
• Commitment to one 12-hour shift weekly or four 12-hour shifts per month.

Responsibilities

• Assist with ADLs and vital signs, support mobility and hygiene.
• Perform basic nursing tasks as you gain experience (wound/catheter care, specimen collection).
• Document care accurately and communicate updates to the nursing team.
• Explain care plans to patients and families and provide guidance.
• Maintain clean, safe patient areas following infection prevention practices.
• Engage in growth opportunities and develop a personal career plan with your supervisor.

Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Nurse Extern, you’ll be a valued part of the nursing team, gaining hands‑on experience as you explore the full scope of the Registered Nurse role. You’ll help deliver safe, compassionate care that improves patients’ lives while building the skills and confidence to take on more advanced responsibilities as you progress through your nursing program.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing essential care for patients by helping with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living), checking vital signs, supporting mobility, and ensuring comfort and hygiene
• Performing nursing tasks like wound care, catheter care, collecting specimens, and other basic procedures as you gain experience and grow in your competency
• Documenting care accurately and communicating timely updates with the nursing team to keep patient care seamless and coordinated
• Helping patients and families understand their care plans and offering guidance for their health and recovery
• Keeping patient areas clean and safe by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and maintaining an organized environment
• Championing your growth and enhancing patient care by engaging in learning opportunities, sharing ideas to improve care, and partnering with your supervisor or preceptor to build your personal career development plan

What qualifications you will need:

• Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
• Must be enrolled in an accredited ADN or BSN program
• Completed Foundations, Fundamentals, or Med Surg I
• Professional communication skills
• Meet scheduling requirements – one 12 hour shift per week or 4 - 12 hour shifts per month
