Extern I at Carondelet St. Joseph's Hospital in Tucson, AZ, provides direct nursing care under the supervision of an RN or Clinical Manager, assisting with activities of daily living and patient comfort.

You will work within a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality care at a facility with stroke center capabilities. The role emphasizes patient experience, safety, and adherence to established policies, while developing clinical skills through hands-on patient interactions and continuing

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or GED; currently enrolled in accredited registered nursing program and has completed their first clinical rotation.
• Licensure: Active CPR.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care under the direction of an RN or Clinical Manager, including activities of daily living (hygiene, mobility, feeding).
• Measure and record vital signs; monitor and document intake and output.
• Measure oxygenation with pulse oximetry.
• Obtain weight using standing, sling, bed, or chair scale.
• Report patient pain and changes in condition to an RN promptly.
• Assist with bathing, oral/denture care, and shampooing.
• Observe skin integrity and ensure adequate turning to prevent breakdown.
• Measure for, apply, and remove anti-embolism stockings.
• Apply and remove sequential-compression devices.
• Apply and remove Buck's traction after initial application by RN/PT.
• Provide care per RN guidance according to the SKIN bundle and fall-prevention interventions.
• Other duties as assigned

Job Summary

The Extern I completes work in accordance with standards of the specific environment under the direct supervision of the RN or Clinical Manager. Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to provide the very best care for our patients in our advanced facilities that include a primary stroke center. The Extern I is required to provide an excellent patient experience consistent with Relationship-Based Care. Follows established policy and procedures as directed. Performs all job duties in a safe manner with respect to safety and to self and others. Equipment and supplies maintained, monitored, and malfunctions reported to manager. Uses time management and flexibility in organizing and prioritizing workload to provide optimal service to the department and network. Accountable for performing and providing quality patient care in the specific environment. Effectively performs direct patient care tasks to assist licensed personnel. Recognize and respect cultural and spiritual differences and demonstrate culturally competent care.
