Job Description: Nurse Extern II - Critical Care ICU

Department: 34500 Aurora West Allis Medical Center - Critical Care: ICU

Status: Part time

Benefits Eligible: No

Hours Per Week: 8

Schedule Details/Additional Information: One 8-hour shift per week on days.

Opportunities: Nurse Extern II for Fall 2025 Graduates!

The ICU at West Allis Medical is a 16-bed generalized critical care unit caring for diverse critically ill patients. This role offers growth in knowledge and skills, providing various experiences. Transition seamlessly from Nurse Extern II to Registered Nurse. One 8-hour shift weekly on days, with Med/Surg and pharmacology course completion required. Apply now as spots are limited!

Major Responsibilities:
  • Assist with activities of daily living, vital signs, and blood glucose monitoring under RN supervision.
  • Collaborate with RN to develop care plans based on patient needs and preferences.
  • Evaluate patient responses to interventions and communicate observations to RN.
  • Develop delegation skills for roles such as Health Unit Coordinators and Nursing Assistants.
  • Administer medications as delegated by RN, ensuring clinical judgment and proficiency.
  • Manage multiple patients, incorporating time management principles.
  • Accurately collect and synthesize patient data to identify needs.
  • Participate in emergency activities under RN supervision.
  • Perform patient positioning and transport duties using proper techniques.
  • Provide age-appropriate care, understanding growth and development principles.
Qualifications:

Licensure/Certification: None required.

Education: Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program.

Experience: Some healthcare experience preferred (CNA, LPN, MA, EMS, ED Tech).

Skills & Abilities: Final-year nursing student or graduate, completion of Med/Surg course including pharmacology, strong interpersonal skills, adaptability.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, and perform physical tasks as described.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs., carry 40 lbs., push/pull 30 lbs., and perform transfers with assistance.
  • Functional vision and hearing required.
  • Exposure to hazards and need for protective clothing as necessary.

$21.45 - $32.20
