Position Summary

In this role, the successful Clinical Nurse Educator candidate will assume a major role in the orientation of new nursing personnel. The Clinical Nurse Educator is responsible for the orientation process from the classroom to the clinical area by working with the orientee and the preceptor. The role of the Clinical Nurse Educator is that of educator, facilitator, change agent, consultant, researcher and leader. The roles emerge from ANA Scope and Standard of Practice for Nursing Professional Development.

Duties of a Clinical Nurse Educator may include the following but are not limited to:

  1. Serve as a role model and leader to staff, behaving in a way that is consistent with Hospital values and sets a positive example.
  2. Collaborates and cooperates across departments and disciplines to solve problems and facilitate processes.
  3. Fosters open, direct communication between personnel, patients, and physicians for the betterment of patient care and the professional environment.
  4. Responsible for the direction, supervision, and coordination of all nursing activities relating to patient care in his/her unit.
  5. Enforces high patient care standards and satisfaction.
  6. Acts as a teacher and mentor to staff, helping personnel to develop global perspectives, critical thinking, and clinical skills.
  7. Ensures adequate resources through accurate forecasting and close monitoring of supplies.
  8. Monitors operating and capital expenditures, including equipment, payroll, and overtime usage.
  9. Acts as the decision maker and takes responsibility for both the successes and the failures of a unit.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Current licensure to practice professional nursing in New York State.
  2. Minimum 5 years' experience in Emergency Department and/or Critical Care.
  3. Progressive leadership experience.
  4. Willingness for continued learning.
  5. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, and multitasking skills.
  6. Standing/walking 50% of the time.
  7. Ability to occasionally lift heavy objects.
  8. Bachelor’s degree, preferably in nursing.
  9. BLS, ACLS, PALS certifications through the American Heart Association.
  10. TNCC certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master's degree in nursing or related field.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBSH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Southampton's Employee Health Services.
  • Complete electronic reference checks with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4-panel drug screen.
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

*The Human Resources department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
