SUMMARY: Responsible for instruction of all individuals with diabetes and their families in all aspects of diabetes and its treatment as it pertains to that individual. Teaching is done with consideration to patient’s age, sex, and cultural and religious beliefs, which may affect the education process and compliance. Also responsible for developing and advising diabetes related policies within RMC.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Hours: 8:30am-5pm

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university preferred. Five years’ experience as a staff nurse and two years’ experience in patient education required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: Current California RN license, Diabetes Educator Certification, and Current AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) - American Heart Association certification required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions are those tasks, duties and responsibilities that comprise the means of accomplishing the job’s purpose and objectives. Essential functions are critical or fundamental to the performance of the job. They are the major functions for which the person in the job is held accountable. Note: other duties may be assigned, deleted or changed at any time, at the discretion of management.

  1. Coordinate care and education with primary care physician and nutrition counselor.
  2. Responsible for management activities of the patient in an efficient and cost-effective manner, providing optimal achievable patient education and care, and responsible for keeping computer-based data for outcome studies.
  3. Responsible for self-education and personal growth of patients.
  4. Develop and present information on diabetes to the community and other physicians and staff.
  5. Work with the Marketing Representative to provide programs, advertising, newsletters, and to improve public relations.
  6. Recognize the existence of patient’s rights and exercise those rights without regard to sex, cultural beliefs, economic status, educational background, or religious background.
  7. Recognize the confidentiality of patient’s treatment records.
  8. Inventory and order medical supplies and materials, as needed.
  9. Be an active participant in the Health Education Committee Meetings.
