Description
This is a Full Time, salaried position for the Cardiology clinic at Lake Forest Hospital. Schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm with one remote day per week.
The Nurse Clinician reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
- The Nurse Clinician will work in a multidisciplinary environment which requires exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, physicians, clinical and administrative units. This position utilizes nursing skills to perform patient assessments via phone or in person and implement nursing interventions; it requires the ability to use appropriate judgment, independent thinking, and creativity when resolving patient care issues. The nurse is also responsible for initiating and organizing patient education for the population this unit serves.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment. Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations. Report deficiencies to supervisor immediately. Assist in rectifying deficiencies as requested. Assume responsibility for and supervise the appropriate care of medical equipment.
- Provide pre-attending care for patients. Perform comprehensive assessments of chief complaints and patient needs, utilizing the nursing process. Seek solutions and offer opinions to physicians and other healthcare providers based on findings. Document all assessments clearly, completely, and legibly in the patient’s medical record. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times and understand protocols for releasing patient/medical information.
- Perform routine nursing duties and demonstrate clinical competency. Independently perform duties including phlebotomy, medication administration, vital signs measurement, and lab specimen preparation. Demonstrate competency in complex procedures such as conscious sedation, chemotherapy, inseminations, implantable pain pump adjustments, and wound excisions and drainages.
- Interpret test results and define abnormalities. Take appropriate remedial actions and document interventions appropriately, ensuring clarity and legibility in records.
- Communicate and collaborate with other departments. Coordinate patient care with clinical and administrative units, and communicate with outside agencies as needed.
- Triage and prioritize incoming calls. Use clinical assessment skills and service standards to triage calls, documenting assessments clearly in the medical record.
- Manage urgent/emergent situations. Follow protocols for medical emergencies and cardiac arrests, obtaining and operating emergency equipment according to standards.
- Serve as a resource for staff and physicians. Maintain alertness to patient needs, proactively address issues, and delegate tasks appropriately according to Illinois law and organizational protocols to LPNs and Medical Assistants.
- Comply with all policies and procedures. Make recommendations for new policies to improve patient experience and ensure timely implementation.
- Initiate and coordinate patient education. Ensure patient understanding of educational materials and demonstrate return demonstrations when relevant. Provide staff education and participate in community outreach, support groups, and specialty educational programs.
Qualifications
Required:
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
- Registered Nurse licensure in Illinois.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support CPR certification.
- Recent nursing experience within the past five years or recent graduate within the past two years. If experience is less than six months, approval from NMG Director of Professional Development is required.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (preferred, may be required for some Oncology roles).
- 1-2 years’ experience in ambulatory or acute care.
