Description: Clinician is a professional nurse who is an expert in the care of a specified patient population/subspecialty area. The clinician assumes a leadership role and supervisory responsibilities in the development, organization, and implementation of care services for the specified patient population.

Depending on location, the clinician may assume leadership responsibilities at the unit level, demonstrating mastery of clinical skills, or may develop and organize clinical research studies under the general supervision of the physician in charge of a project, providing nursing care to a specific population of patients requiring specialized knowledge gained through formal education and experience. The clinician plans, implements and assesses individual nursing care plans or assigned research protocols, establishes priorities, assigns and assists nursing and ancillary personnel, orients new staff, and communicates policy within established guidelines.

Duties / Responsibilities

• Provides direct care to patients within accepted framework of nursing standards/practice: assessment, performs history and physical, consults with attending, interprets data, performs procedures directed to patient care, calculates drug dosages, evaluates and documents treatment and response, communicates to physician, and collaborates with all members of the specified team and other interdisciplinary team members.
• Provides psychological assessment and emotional support to patients and families: makes appropriate referrals to ancillary services, consults and collaborates with other health professionals, designs, implements, and evaluates comprehensive teaching plans, and routinely reinforces them.
• Provides planned orientation and in‑service education for nursing staff and house staff: develops healthcare protocols, procedures, and forms to improve and standardize care; requests current patient demographics, requests specialty clinic appointments when needed; acts as consultant and resource person for all interdisciplinary team members and outside agencies; assists with new or revised policies, procedures, and guidelines; assesses equipment and supplies availability.
• Shares new knowledge, theories, research, and modes of practice with nursing, medical, and ancillary staff: demonstrates cost‑effectiveness and time efficiency for patients, families, and clinic resources; demonstrates expertise in managing subspecialty care services as evidenced by expertly planned, implemented, evaluated, documented, and performed work at the appropriate level of practitioner; demonstrates understanding of systems, data, resource utilization, and allocation.
• Serves as a liaison between subspecialty team, CHS departments and local health departments (community organizations, schools of nursing, and other agencies): performs ongoing performance and improvement activities at least quarterly, evaluates internal resources, describes gaps, suggests improvements, attends relevant training, continuing education, and workshops to maintain licensure and build knowledge base.
• Performs other duties as assigned

Salary Range: $56,788.16 - $70,000

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and three (3) years of related experience required. Work experience may not substitute for the education requirement. Candidate must be currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
