POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision and/or direction of House Supervisor/Shift Charge Nurse or designee, the Nurse Aide is responsible to assist the professional staff by performing various duties necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of the hospitalized patient.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & AUTHORITIES:
  1. Patient Treatment Activities
    • a. Performs routine and non-sterile treatment procedures and records
    • b. Assists nurses in complicated treatment procedures.
  2. Patient Care Activities
    • a. Helps prepare unit, patient room, and bed for receiving patient, admission, returning surgical patient, transfer or emergencies.
    • b. Assist in and as necessary, accompanies patient in the admission, transfer, and discharge procedures.
    • c. Demonstrates ability to administer complete/partial baths and personal care including bath, oral care, denture care, Foley cath care, hair/nail care, shaving, shampooing and bed making.
    • d. Provides evening care, and other general care throughout the day and records.
    • e. Assists in the toileting needs of the patient and records accurately. Empties drainage collection devices and completes documentation in the patient record.
    • f. As directed, takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, abdominal girth, blood pressure, intake/output measurements, other treatments as applicable and recording such.
    • e. Assists with pre-operative care, positioning patients, lifting and turning patient using proper body mechanics,respiratory aids, applying/utilizing special equipment as necessary, ambulating the patient as directed, and recording such.
    • f. Prepares patient for meals, distributes food trays, assists or feeds patients as necessary, removes trays and records. Distributes drinking water and other nourishment to patients.
    • g. Performs general care activities for patients in isolation. Provides post-mortem care.
    • h. Makes rounds to assigned patients, anticipates patients needs, and answers/responds to patients call-lights/paging in a prompt manner.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Handles and cares for patients clothing and other personal property (including prosthetic devices, hearing aides, dentures, glasses, contact lenses, etc.) from admission through discharge of the patient.
  2. Collects specimens, records on Bedside Flow Charts, transports to proper area as requested. Completes specimen requisition with initials and time collected.
  3. Recognizes and reports to nurse any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient.
  4. Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment by:
    • a. Reporting equipment that is out of order.
    • b. Reporting other problems to charge nurse.
    • c. Cleaning equipment and preparing for sterilization.
    • d. Keeping dirty linen hamper covered and out of the vicinity of the clean linens.
    • e. Empting patient trash in room.
    • f. Keeping bedside tables and room free of clutter and debris.
  5. Records care and treatment through thorough charting in the EMR.
  6. . Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and other hospital personnel, while assuring confidentiality of patient information.
  7. Attends in-service programs, as assigned, to learn new treatments, procedures, etc.
  8. Attends all but 2 scheduled nursing meetings per year unless excused by Nursing Administration. PRN staff is only required to attend 2 per year.
  9. Assists Activity Director with activities for swing bed patients.
  10. Gives report to oncoming nurse aides at shift change.
  11. Follows direction and completes assignments requested by team leader or supervisor in a prompt manner.
  12. Demonstrates knowledge of and adheres to all infection control procedures including properhandwashing techniques, contact with blood and body fluids and care of patients indifferent types of Isolation.
  13. Maintains a professional appearance and complies with hospital dress code.
  14. Maintains a cooperative team approach manner towards all members of the healthcare team.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, ABILITIES):
  1. High School graduate or equivalent work experience, including ability to read, write, use computer to document and comprehend medical terminology.
  2. Previous experience as a Nursing Assistant preferred.
  3. Certified nurse aide certificate preferred.
  4. Good physical and mental health, able to work under pressure, and relate to patients, hospital staff, and visitors.
  5. Must have excellent interpersonal relationship skills.
OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, REGISTRATIONS, ETC.)
  1. Nurse Aide Certification through the state of Kentucky preferred.
  2. Maintains current certification as Basic CPR Provider.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Lifting varied weights, pulling, and standing for long periods of time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work areas often cramped around patients beds. Environment is often stressful and fast paced. Required use of various types of pumps and medical equipment. Also, possible exposure to body fluids, blood, and various infectious diseases.
