Job Summary

Vistra is seeking highly motivated, disciplined, and detail-oriented professionals to join our Nuclear Operations team as Licensed Nuclear Reactor Operator Trainees.

This position offers a unique, fully funded 2-year intensive training program designed to prepare you for Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) licensing exam. Upon successful completion of the training program and receipt of your operator license, you will transition into a full-time role as a Licensed Reactor Operator, working a rotating shift schedule to monitor, control, and safely operate the facility’s nuclear reactor and auxiliary systems.

Job Description
2-Year Training Program

During the initial 24-month training period, trainees will engage in rigorous classroom instruction, simulator training, and on-the-job mentorship. Duties include:

  • Completing comprehensive coursework in reactor physics, thermodynamics, fluid flow, radiation protection, plant chemistry, and system design.
  • Mastering plant operations through hands-on simulator scenarios, covering normal operations, abnormal conditions, and emergency procedures.
  • Passing scheduled written, oral, and simulator examinations administered by plant instructors and regulatory authorities.
  • Shadowing licensed operators in the control room and around the plant facility to gain practical operational knowledge.
Post-Licensing (Shift Work)

Upon passing the regulatory licensing exam and obtaining your operator license, you will transition into active operations:

  • Control Room Operations: Monitor, adjust, and control reactor systems, turbine generator, and auxiliary equipment from the main control room.
  • Safety & Compliance: Strictly adhere to plant technical specifications, regulatory requirements, and operating procedures to maintain safe operational margins.
  • System Testing & Maintenance: Conduct routine surveillance tests, equipment tagouts, and system lineups; log operational parameters accurately.
  • Shift Work: Work a rotating shift schedule (typically 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays) to ensure uninterrupted, 24/7/365 plant coverage.
  • Emergency Response: Maintain continuous readiness to respond to off-normal conditions, emergencies, or plant transients.
Required
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience
  • 6 months as a qualified non-licensed operator on site
  • 12 months as a qualified non-licensed operator at a comparable PWR power plant or 18 months at a non-comparable PWR/BWR power plant
  • 6 months as a reactor operator at a comparable PWR power plant or 12 months at a non-comparable PWR/BWR power plant
  • 18 months Navy operator in one of the following positions (Reactor Operator, Engineering Officer of the Watch/Propulsion Plant Watch Supervisor)
  • 27 months non-nuclear power plant experience in petrochemical; similar process plants; or steam propulsion plant operation
Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong foundational knowledge of basic math, physics, and mechanical/electrical principles.
