Job summary

Qualifications

  • CNMT or ARRT(N) certification required upon hire; BLS required; Maryland/VA state licensure upon hire.

Under general supervision the Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using radiopharmaceuticals. This role involves preparing and administering radioactive drugs, operating imaging equipment, and ensuring patient safety throughout the process. The technologist collaborates with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate diagnostic information and effective treatment plans.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates basic clinical competency in nuclear medicine technology across all locations and patient populations. Prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals and adjunctive medications to perform patient imaging procedures. Provides image data, analysis, and patient information for diagnostic interpretation. Selects appropriate technical factors on an individual patient basis and demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care.
  • Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement initiatives to enhance workflows, patient experience, quality, safety, and operational efficiency. Actively participates in student and employee training and educational activities. Assists with research projects and clinical trials involving nuclear medicine techniques.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and prepared work environment, including the Hot Lab and patient rooms. Maintains supplies and inventory within the department. Receives, manages, and disposes of radioactive waste in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures radiation safety precautions are followed at all times.
  • Verifies physician orders, patient preparation, and the reason for the exam to initiate appropriate scanning protocols. Communicates effectively with patients, obtains patient histories, answers questions, and explains procedures to ensure patient understanding and comfort. Processes examinations for interpretation.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance and operation of equipment by performing quality control procedures and promptly reporting equipment or environmental issues.
  • Provides patient education and support, including preparing patients for procedures and addressing their physical and psychological needs. Escalates concerns through appropriate channels.
  • Prioritizes patient flow and coordinates care through consistent communication with patients, care teams, and families. Documents patient care activities in electronic health record systems. Distributes final images to PACS and nuclear medicine systems in a timely manner for interpretation.
  • Acts and communicates professionally at all times, embodying the organization's SPIRIT values and fostering a respectful and supportive environment for patients, families, and colleagues. Adheres to ARRT Standards of Ethics.
  • Applies knowledge of nuclear medicine principles and practices, including anatomy and physiology, radiation safety, physics, quality assurance, patient positioning, and patient care. Ensures the safe storage and delivery of radiopharmaceuticals. Adheres to Joint Commission, state, federal, and departmental regulatory and compliance standards.
Qualifications
Education
  • Associate's degree required. Graduation from a Nuclear Medicine Technology program with a certificate or advanced degree accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology or a related field preferred.
Experience
  • 2+ years of nuclear medicine experience required.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT) through the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) required upon hire; or
  • Registered Technologist in Nuclear Medicine, ARRT (N), through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) required upon hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required upon hire.
  • Licensed Radiologic Technologist in the State of Maryland or Virginia (outpatient locations only, if applicable) required upon hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.

This position has a hiring range of USD $35.68 - USD $58.84 /Hr.
