Job Summary

Knowledgeable and competent in the handling of positron emitting radiopharmaceuticals, computers, and scintillation detection equipment. Operates both Nuclear Medicine and PET equipment to obtain diagnostic images or measurements of pharmaceutical distribution in specified body areas.

Essential Functions

  1. Administers diagnostic doses of radiopharmaceuticals under the supervision of a Radiopharmacist.
  2. Examines requests and verifies orders on each assigned patient. Refers and questions orders to the Radiologist before performing the exam. Contacts the ordering physician when there are discrepancies.
  3. Correlates other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed.
  4. Obtains medications, radiopharmaceuticals, or contrast materials as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner, authorized/certified technologist, or registered nurse.
  5. Operates dose calibrators, computers, lab equipment, and survey meters.
  6. Verifies the correct patient by checking the patient's armband and validates proof of identity. Records medical history on requisitions.
  7. Records dose information, patient data, dates, views, and other pertinent information on finished exams.
  8. Evaluates technical quality of images and consults with a Radiologist if needed. Recognizes abnormal anatomy and processes any additional, reconstructed images and/or measurements as instructed.

Physical Requirements
This position requires moderate to heavy physical efforts in lifting and moving patients, equipment, and supplies up to 600 pounds with assistance. May be required to stretch, bend, twist, squat, and kneel in performing diagnostic procedures. Vision and hearing for distances of at least 20 feet are necessary. Able to carry weights of up to 25 pounds while moving film jackets, supplies, or equipment to work areas. Significant walking will be required as approximately 50% of work time will be standing. 50% of work time will be operating computers, monitors, survey meters, and other equipment requiring manual dexterity and use of the hands. Precision manual dexterity is required for venipuncture and radiopharmaceutical administration.

Education, Experience and Certifications

High School Diploma or GED required. Successful completion of an AMA approved Nuclear Medicine Technology program required. Registered with NMTCB or ARRT (N) required. Nuclear Medicine Technology experience preferred. Proficiency in computer, radiation physics, and tomographic imaging highly preferred. BLS required per policy guidelines.
