Job summary

BWX Technologies, Inc. invites applications for a Summer 2027 Mechanical Design Intern at the Advanced Technologies Office in Lynchburg, VA.

You will assist in designing and developing high-temperature gas reactor components and nuclear-related systems, collaborating with engineers, data scientists, technicians, and project managers. As an enrolled engineering student, you will gain exposure to design-for-manufacturing, documentation, and procurement activities while learning industry codes and

Qualifications

• Must be a currently enrolled student pursuing an engineering degree.
• Coursework or project experience related to mechanical engineering concepts.
• Interest in nuclear reactor systems or complex mechanical assemblies; exposure helpful but not required.
• Willingness to learn ASME codes such as Section III and VIII.
• Familiarity with 3D modeling software (SolidWorks) through coursework or projects.
• Basic understanding of engineering drawings and GD&T concepts.
• Ability to follow task plans and schedules with support from the engineering team.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for a technical environment.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team and ask questions when guidance is needed.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing tasks independently.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Responsibilities

• Assist with basic component and system design activities, including models and drawings, with guidance.
• Support mechanical design efforts and consider assembly, testing, and inspection with mentorship.
• Learn and apply fundamental design control and configuration management concepts.
• Contribute to portions of larger design tasks and documentation.
• Learn procedures, processes, and tools while supporting production stages.
• Help gather and document procurement requirements for mechanical components.
