Job summary

Nano Nuclear Energy Inc. in Oak Ridge, TN, is seeking a Materials Characterization Engineer to build and lead advanced materials testing capabilities for fuel development and qualification, with relocation support and a hybrid work option.

Reporting to the VP of Fuels Technology, you will define laboratory capabilities, develop characterization strategies, and transition testing from external labs to in-house operations, while providing hands-on leadership across brittle ceramics, SiC coatings,

Qualifications

• Advanced degree in materials science or related field.
• Hands-on specimen preparation and testing experience.
• Experience with NDE methods and ceramics.
• Understanding of brittle-material mechanics and interfaces.
• Ability to translate engineering questions into characterization plans.

Responsibilities

• Define laboratory capabilities, equipment needs, and phased development plans.
• Develop characterization plans linking testing to manufacturing performance.
• Establish mechanical-testing methods for brittle ceramics and coatings.
• Develop NDE approaches and correlate with destructive examination.
• Conduct hands-on specimen prep, testing, data analysis, and method optimization.
• Coordinate with national labs and universities to transfer methods in-house.
