Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Nuclear Material Events Professional to support the NRC’s NMED project on the Regulatory Research team. You will collect, review, and code event data and assist with analysis and training for NRC and Agreement States.

The role requires knowledge of NRC rules and health physics, with a 9x80 schedule at the REC facility and every other Friday off. Compensation is set by level with substantial ranges.

Job description

At Idaho National Laboratory, you will support the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) Nuclear Material Events Database (NMED) project. In accordance with NRC’s responsibility for evaluating and analyzing operating data for material licensees, the NMED project collects, reviews, and codes nuclear material event data, and maintains a database of non-reactor events. NMED is used to assemble data to support: 1) the NRC performance goals and metrics; 2) reporting to Congress (including abnormal occurrences); 3) the Agency Action Review Meeting; and 4) event trending analysis. Screening and updating nuclear material event data ensures that NMED serves as an accurate source of performance data.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

• Collect, review, and code nuclear material event data.
• Provide event review, analysis, and assessment support to NRC’s nuclear material assessment staff.
• Provide short-term technical assistance and training to the NRC and Agreement States as needed.
• Perform reviews of material events for the identification of sensitive unclassified information, as well as personal privacy information.
• Develop new procedures (and/or modify existing procedures) for maintaining NMED.
• Support the maintenance and upgrade of the NMED Agreement State software (a local standalone system provided to Agreement States)
• Support the maintenance and upgrade of the NMED database, software, and website.
• Support the assurance that all computer security requirements are met.

Required:

• Level 2: Bachelor of Science degree in a technical field from an accredited program and 2 years of relevant experience or an advanced degree in a technical field from an accredited program and 0 years of experience.
• Level 3: Bachelor of Science degree in a technical field from an accredited program and 5 years of relevant experience or an advanced degree in a technical field from an accredited program and 2 years of relevant experience.
• This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain NRC Information Technology Level-II access.

The ideal candidate will possess:

• Sufficient knowledge of NRC and equivalent Agreement State rules and regulations on reporting requirements for material licensees to review and code event records from event reports.
• Sufficient knowledge and familiarity with the application of the NRC abnormal occurrences criteria.
• Sufficient knowledge of the application of various medical modalities (e.g., brachytherapy and thyroid ablation therapy) and medical device functionality (e.g., dose calibrators).
• A thorough knowledge of health physics and radiation safety practices associated with:
  • The use of material covered under the Atomic Energy Act (AEA; e.g., byproduct, naturally occurring and accelerator-produced [NARM], source, and special nuclear material in medical, research, industrial radiography, well logging, industrial measuring, and irradiator applications); and
  • The transportation and disposal of such material.
• A high level of knowledge of the operation of computer database systems and the NMED database data entry application.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds without assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required. Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Material Events Professional to work on our Regulatory Research team. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our REC facility with every other Friday off.

• The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($79,344 - $162,732) / Level 3 ($95,256 - $195,288). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
• Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
