Job summary

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks an Instrumentation and Controls System Engineer to design, analyze, install, upgrade, and maintain I&C systems for safety-critical facilities within NNFD. You will support operations, procurement, and design teams to ensure operability and compliance with codes and DOE requirements.

Qualifications

• BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls, Mechanical, or related with I&C experience.
• 5-8 years of experience in industrial/nuclear instrumentation and controls system engineering.
• Ability to diagnose equipment problems and develop formal instructions for performance and documentation of repairs.
• Experience in leading maintenance tasks, procedure development, procurement of materials, and equipment analysis is required.

Responsibilities

• Configuration management for systems and components.
• Prepare designs for replacement and upgrade of structures, systems, and components.
• Performs calculations to support design development per industry codes.
• Reviews design specs to determine performance criteria for upgrades.
• Writes material specs and initiates procurement of safety-related components.
• Develops testing and inspection methods for commercial-grade components in safety systems.
• Implements modifications in accordance with configuration control processes.
• Designs and develops new control systems.
• Develops design output documents.
• Troubleshoots system and component failures and develops corrective actions.
• Provides field work technical direction to craft supervisors and craft personnel.
• Develops preventive maintenance instructions.
• Develops operating/test procedures.
• Maintains aging status of I&C components and equipment database.
• Evaluates equipment impact on facility operation.
• Guides on electrical equipment procurement to meet NRTL listings/labeling.
• Obtains Qualified Electrical Worker role as needed for I&C work.
• Assists with safety summaries, work plans, and procedures.
• Reviews and approves safety-related work activities.
