What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 or Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Position will be filled as either a field engineer, project engineer, or systems engineer depending on candidate qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Plutonium Infrastructure Engineering Division (PIE-DO) of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions in support of the Laboratory's Plutonium Facility. PIE-DO is responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program on Division projects. The program include processes, standards, training, and qualifications that are generally applicable throughout the life cycle of a facility. They exist to effectively manage risks and satisfy customer requirements in a safe, secure, cost effective, and environmentally responsible manner. The selected candidate will support our Install team.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 $96,600-$158,000

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 is responsible for ensuring that the technical aspects of construction and maintenance projects are executed in full conformance with the Approved Project Documents by monitoring facility maintenance and construction activities. This is accomplished by providing input during scoping, design, execution, and project closeout to ensure baseline documents are accurate, design documents are adhered to, and as-built configurations are verified. Nuclear facility engineers expedite project execution by identifying issues, coordinating technical solutions, and providing timely guidance to the constructor through approved procedures. The level 1 Nuclear Facilities Engineer will require a basic understanding of field engineering principles and have an aptitude to apply these principles throughout the execution of the job. The selected candidate will support our Install Engineering team.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 $106,400-$176,000

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, the level 2 Nuclear Facilities Engineer will require a demonstrated understanding of Engineering principles and have applied these principles on the job.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Ability to provide technical guidance to field execution teams on applicable codes, standards, specifications, and design criteria.
  • Ability to manage technical construction requirements, including designer-constructor coordination, design changes, submittal reviews, inspection documentation, RFIs, FCRs, commissioning, and turnover processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform field verifications to ensure construction activities comply with drawings, specifications, and applicable national codes and standards.
  • Ability to manage externally executed design efforts, including contract oversight, as required.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for collaborative problem solving to resolve nuclear facility and infrastructure engineering issues, serving as a liaison between design engineers and construction personnel.
Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2:
  • Awareness of national and industry codes and standards such as NEC, IBC, ASME, etc.
  • Demonstrated expertise in reading and understanding engineering design documents, drawings, and specifications to ensure their completeness and constructability.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in conducting field verification's of construction work to oversee, facilitate, and enforce compliance with drawings, specifications, national codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in collaborative problem solving to resolve nuclear facility engineering issues in the field as the liaison between design engineers and the constructor.
Education/Experience at lower level:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Candidates that meet the degree requirement, but do not meet the 2-year minimum experience requirement are encouraged to apply and may be considered for hire through an exception process.

Education/Experience at higher level:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Current registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT)
  • Professional registration with a recognized state licensing board.
  • Familiarity with DOE standards and Orders, e.g., DOE O 413.3b, DOE-STD-1189, DOE-STD-1066, etc.
  • Experience in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD tools.
Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation):

Work Location:

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment:

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Work Schedule:

This position may 24/7 coverage, which will involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager based on needs for the facilities.

  • B Shift: Night 4 x 10 hours Mon-Thurs or Tues - Fri. 5:00pm-3:30am
  • D Shift: Night 4 x 10 hours Fri. - Mon. 5:00pm - 3:30am

Clearance: Q

Position will be cleared to this level. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

Eligibility requirements:

To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP:

This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include ongoing drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test:

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
