Are you passionate about the design, development, and testing of systems that are survivable in hostile radiation environments?


If so, we're looking for someone like you to join the Weapon Control Concepts Development Group at APL!


We are seeking a technical subject matter expert (SME) to be a part of our team. This candidate will offer technical contributions related to design, testing, and development of nuclear survivable systems. The SME will contribute to analysis of all technical aspects of nuclear survivability. Primary responsibilities include detailed understanding of the nuclear environment, analysis of a system's response to a nuclear event, and development of appropriate solutions to mitigate undesired effects. The SME will work closely with the Group Supervisor and Program Managers to ensure coordination and flow of information and analysis results for the Ballistic Missile Defense System.


As a Subject Matter Expert you will...


  • Conduct analysis efforts related to Nuclear Survivability

  • Interface with MDA and other DoD Program Managers on Nuclear Survivability needs

  • Recommend threat descriptions based on appropriate intelligence information including nuclear weapons outputs

  • Improve computing resources and leverage computing assets outside APL to ensure computational support of APL's government mission meets its needs

  • Develop and evolve strategies for performance modeling of weapon systems such that appropriate hostile prompt and persistent insults related to nuclear weapons are properly represented

  • Develop and maintain close relationships with government representatives at DTRA, DIA, MSIC, SMDC, and MDA as needed to ensure close coordination with APL

  • Work with technical teams to identify, develop, and maintain analysis tools required to effectively perform analysis

  • Participate in the review of deliverables and host briefings and discussions with Sponsors

  • Work closely with a technical team to achieve results and also analyze third party results

  • Collaborate with partnering organizations, industry, and other entities on task planning and technical oversight

  • Provide the Sponsors with independent assessment of design solutions


Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...



  • Have a M.S. in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or other applicable technical discipline

  • Have strong theoretical and practical knowledge of nuclear physics

  • Have 5+ years of DoD experience related to Survivability in Nuclear environments

  • Have excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills and are a self-starter

  • Have the ability and willingness to interact with Government Sponsors and stakeholders

  • Have a strong attention to detail and organizational skills

  • Hold an active Secret clearance and have the ability to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship

  • Have the willingness to travel up to 5% of the time as needed

  • Have a PhD in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or other applicable technical discipline

  • Have 10+ years of experience and/or are a Subject Matter Expert in Nuclear Survivability

  • Have held a previous technical leadership role

  • Hold an active TS/SCI security clearance


Special Working Conditions:

This position will be located at the Sponsor site in Huntsville, AL. Up to 5% travel to APL for reach back, as well as domestic non-local travel to support meetings with Sponsors and partner organizations.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
