Design Electrical Nuclear Engineer III/Sr

Summary

The Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) department is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy's six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for the execution of a fleet portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization.

The Robinson (RNP) Nuclear Plant Corporate Design Engineering team manages the capital engineering change (EC) portfolio at the HNP and RNP nuclear sites. The team collaborates with other CDE staff to ensure that high quality design solutions are delivered to meet site needs and milestone requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the scope, technical basis, installation and testing requirements for engineering design changes, which include but are not limited to I&C systems such as radiation monitors, security systems, fire protection systems, digital infrastructure, etc.
  • Research engineering and design issues, evaluates alternatives, determines and presents recommendations to resolve issues.
  • Provide ongoing support of assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities.
  • Develop or revise design specifications or technical requirements documents to support engineering design changes.
  • Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes.
  • Develop safety screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes.
  • Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on department results.
  • Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to specify the design, operation, and maintenance of system/components with moderate impact on existing systems.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic Qualifications

Nuclear Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical/I&C Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master 's degree in Electrical/I&C Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • 4-6 years of engineering experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience.

Sr Nuclear Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical/I&C Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master's degree in Electrical/I&C Engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
  • Proficient in principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • State registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • Working level knowledge of ETAP software program.
  • Working level knowledge of nuclear industry cyber security control practices.
  • Experience with nuclear industry standard design process.

Special Requirements

  • In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed
  • Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires.
  • Occasional overnight travel.

Working Conditions

  • Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
  • The work week is Monday - Thursday (Fridays/weekends as needed), 10-hour days. After completion of initial training and/or obtaining applicable qualifications, the candidate will work a hybrid schedule - two days onsite, two days remote.
  • This position is located at the Robinson Nuclear Plant in Hartsville. SC
