Summary

The Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) department is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy’s six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for executing a portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization.

The Harris Nuclear Plant Corporate Design Civil Engineering team manages the capital engineering change (EC) portfolio at the Harris nuclear site. The team collaborates with other CDE staff to ensure high-quality design solutions are delivered to meet site needs and milestones.

This is an entry-level position in the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision and are expected to develop skills and work with greater independence. They possess knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures and will develop civil/structural engineering solutions supporting design packages for plant equipment upgrades, including scope development, pipe hanger design, structural and pipe stress analysis, soil and steel/concrete structure evaluations, seismic equipment qualification, weld design, and peer review of engineering products.

Responsibilities
  • Provide engineering/technical expertise and guidance in identifying, analyzing, and resolving routine problems.
  • Prepare technical reports, correspondence, calculations, and sketches related to technical problem resolution.
  • Assist in achieving business goals through planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring work activities under supervision.
  • Apply knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Develop positive working relationships and coordinate work activities effectively. Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills. Maintain accurate records and files.
  • Support company goals and represent the company professionally.
Basic/Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • A Master’s degree in Engineering may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
  • 0-2 years of engineering experience.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Background in pipe hanger design, structural analysis, pipe stress analysis, soil and steel/concrete structure evaluations, seismic equipment qualification, and weld design, with willingness to learn ASME B31.1 and ASME Section III pipe stress analysis.
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
  • Experience researching engineering issues, evaluating options, and making recommendations.
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam and interest in obtaining a PE license.
  • Basic project management understanding.
Specific Requirements
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience; or, in lieu, oversight and approval by a qualified individual until fully qualified.
  • Able to achieve nuclear site unescorted access.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and support emergent station needs.
  • Potential ERO responsibilities including callouts and on-call duties, requiring fitness for duty.
  • Wearing PPE as needed.
  • Occasional overnight travel.
Working Conditions
  • Primarily office environment with some plant work for system walkdowns and field support.
  • Hybrid work classification after six months.
