Summary

The Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) department is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy's six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for the execution of a fleet portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization.

The Harris Nuclear Plant Corporate Design Civil Engineering team manages the capital engineering change (EC) portfolio at the Harris nuclear site. The team collaborates with other CDE staff to ensure that high quality design solutions are delivered to meet site needs and milestone requirements.

This is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this entry level solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. They have knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures. They will develop Civil/Structural engineering specific solutions in support of design packages for plant equipment upgrade projects; including, but not limited to scoping and development of design packages for plant modifications; pipe hanger design, structural analysis, pipe stress analysis, soil and steel/concrete structure evaluations/field support, seismic equipment qualification, and weld design and independent reviews of peer prepared engineering products.

Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.

  • Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches associated with the resolution of technical problems.

  • Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.

  • Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic/Required Qualifications:

Nuclear Engineer I

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • A Master 's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

  • 0-2 years of engineering experience.

Nuclear Engineer II

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • A Master 's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

  • 2-4 years of engineering experience.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • Background; pipe hanger design, structural analysis, pipe stress analysis, soil and steel/concrete structure evaluations/field support, seismic equipment qualification, and weld design. With a willingness to perform/learn ASME B31.1 and ASME Section III pipe stress analysis.

  • Understanding basic engineering theories and principles.

  • Understanding basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam and desire to complete PE license.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.

Specific Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience

  • In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.

  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.

  • Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.

  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.

  • Occasional overnight travel.

Working Conditions

  • Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.

  • Hybrid mobility classification after six months
