Job summary

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Nuclear Data Scientist to join the Computational Data Science team. The role supports data analysis across cloud, on-premises, and edge architectures, employing Explainable AI, LLMs, and physics-informed ML, while developing 3D visualization tools and web API solutions.

You will collaborate with domain experts, publish results, and present complex materials to diverse audiences.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in data science, engineering, mathematics, computer science, physics, AI, or related discipline.
• Familiar with ML concepts, data analysis tools, or scientific computing (e.g., Python, R).
• Ability to interpret and communicate data-driven results within a nuclear engineering context.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE level 'Q' security clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

• Analyze data and generate results for data analytics, visualization, and modeling needs across cloud, on-premises, and edge architectures.
• Apply AI/ML, LLMs, physics-informed ML, and data fusion techniques.
• Apply nuclear engineering knowledge to identify ML opportunities within nuclear systems and research programs.
• Support development, validation, and interpretation of ML models and data pipelines.
• Collaborate with data science teams to translate nuclear requirements into analytical frameworks.
• Assist in evaluation of model outputs with nuclear-domain context.
• Contribute to documentation, reports, and presentations on ML-assisted nuclear engineering.
• Lead in writing journal articles and conference proceedings.
