Job description

Nuclear Criticality Safety Engineer, Level VI

Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking a Nuclear Criticality Safety Engineer, Level VI support personnel as part of our staff augmentation team supporting the Department of Energy at the Y‑12 National Security Complex located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance Y-12's core mission to ensure a safe, secure, and reliable U.S. nuclear deterrent, which is essential to national security. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day-to-day direction and assignments from Y-12 staff employed directly by the security complex. Responsibilities
  • Development, revision, and review of Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) documentation such as Criticality Safety Evaluations (CSEs), Nuclear Criticality Safety Determinations (NCSDs), Technical Deviations (TDs), and various other NCS technical basis documentation to include:
    • Completion of required NCS annual Operational Reviews as needed.
    • Daily nuclear facility support as needed; consisting of facility walkdowns, review of NCS requirements implementing documents, participation at facility Operational Safety Boards, etc.
  • Provides technical capabilities in Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) to ensure fissile materials are processed, stored, transferred, and handled safely so that personnel and property are protected against a nuclear criticality accident.
  • Performs analysis of equipment, processes, and procedures prescribing correct methods, control requirements, and limitations.
  • Conducts surveillances, inspections, walkthroughs, appraisals, or audits of fissile material operations to ensure compliance with approvals.
  • Provides operating areas with specific NCS professional interpretations and advice.
  • Performs training to employees in basic NCS as requested.

Qualifications
  • BS Degree or higher in technical discipline from ABET accredited university.
  • 20 or more years of relevant experience w/ 10 or more years direct experience in DOE-specific Nuclear Criticality Safety.
  • Highly experience in the application of DOE rules, guides, orders, standards, and handbooks including 10CFR 830, Nuclear Safety Management.
  • Active DOE Q clearance is required.
  • Pre-employment Drug Screen - External applicants selected for this position are required to successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
  • Medical Exam(s) - Job related pre-placement medical examinations may be required for this position.
  • This position requires the employee to maintain a Q clearance from the Department of Energy. This position will be identified as a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in addition to the pre-employment drug screen.
  • Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age.
