Summary
Under general supervision of the Manager and Lead Technologist of Nuclear Medicine and in accordance with established policies and procedures, performs a variety of technical tasks to facilitate Nuclear Medicine procedures for diagnosis and treatment. Calculates and administers radiopharmaceuticals, performs imaging scans using gamma cameras, SPECT/CT, and PET/CT cameras, and utilizes ancillary equipment. All functions consider age-specific needs of geriatric and pediatric patients, fostering patient-centered care aligned with the mission, vision, and values of Brown University Health and Rhode Island Hospital.
Responsibilities
Explains test procedures to patients to reduce fears and assists them in assuming correct positions. Calculates and administers radiopharmaceuticals via appropriate routes. Operates gamma cameras and scanners to produce diagnostic images, ensuring quality through proper techniques. If operating SPECT/CT or PET/CT equipment, must be licensed for Computed Tomography or Hybrid Imaging in Rhode Island. Conducts calibration and quality control checks. Performs administrative tasks such as chart preparation, scheduling, recording data, and maintaining records. Participates in training programs and maintains departmental order and cleanliness.
Other Information
Requires completion of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology program. If operating advanced imaging equipment, licensing for CT or Hybrid Imaging in Rhode Island is required. Must hold certification from ARRT or NMTCB and a current CPR certification from AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers. Must demonstrate effective interpersonal skills, analytical ability for radiopharmaceutical preparation, and proficiency with modern Nuclear Medicine equipment. Knowledge of age-related and cultural considerations in patient care is essential.
Experience
One to three months of progressively responsible related experience is required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Regular exposure to radioactive materials with safety procedures in place. Work involves walking, standing, and physical ability to lift or position patients. The department environment is generally quiet with some heat discomfort from equipment.
