Overview

In accordance with education-based athletics, Head Coaches will develop an effective coaching program plan which includes skill development, practice planning, supervision of all levels of the sport, focusing on individual and team growth while instilling the highest ideals of character. The head coach will effectively communicate with student-athletes, parents, and administration.

Qualifications
  • Teachers or certificated professional educators employed by the local Board of Education.
  • Persons certifiable as professional educators by the State Department of Education according to 13A.12.01.
  • Credentialed Coaches who meet the following requirements:
    • Eligible to hold a Maryland certificate under COMAR 13A.12.01.
    • Possess a MPSSAA/MSDE Coaching Certification.
    • Completed two years of successful coaching as an emergency coach.
    • Spent the previous one year as a successful emergency coach at the school of hire in the position of hire.
Essential Job Functions
  • Provide the athletic director with all coaching certifications required by the MPSSAA and Charles County Public Schools.
  • Complete forms as required by Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association and the Board of Education (eligibility roster, player address, accident report, etc.).
  • Ensure only eligible student-athletes begin tryouts, with proper paperwork presented to the coach or staff.
  • Issue equipment only to athletes cleared for tryouts by the athletic director.
  • Conduct a mandatory pre-season meeting with students and parents to review team responsibilities and expectations.
  • Check all equipment used in the sport, make repairs as needed, and maintain inventory.
  • Supervise assistant coaches and assign duties.
  • Make recommendations for program improvements and equipment needs.
  • Ensure all coaches are approved and cleared before coaching responsibilities.
  • Review Superintendent Rule 1111 with staff regarding communication with students.
  • Attend coaches' meetings, clinics, and evaluate coaching staff.
  • Complete and maintain school records for the sport, including new records set and honors received.
  • Prepare a budget request for the next season.
Environmental Factors & Physical Requirements

The position requires mobility to visit various locations, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, and carrying light to medium weights (10-50 pounds). Good hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and visual acuity are necessary. The employee frequently sits, reaches, talks, and hears.
