Position Summary

The Nordic patroller is responsible for emergency medical care and transportation of injured skiers and trail maintenance that promotes increased skier safety and hazard identification. Daily duties include patrolling trails, being visible and available for guests, and documentation of incidents that occur on the trails as required. The Nordic Patroller also provides direction and training to a volunteer staff of 12 National Ski Patrollers with daily task assignments and event coverage.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities
  • Know the location of first aid equipment and all essential daily operations gear and replace as necessary.
  • Skiing/sled/snowmobile handling in all snow conditions/terrain.
  • Familiar with all areas on the Nordic trails, snowshoe trails, and routes of backcountry access, including those off the labeled trails.
  • Know all dispatch protocol.
  • Train Nordic Staff in dispatch communication.
  • Ski all trails throughout the day, maintaining signage, dealing with potential hazards, and inspecting the trails for safety.
  • Respond to and evaluate incidents.
  • Administer first aid as necessary.
  • To operate within the guidelines of your current level.
  • Understand the Avalanche reduction plan, assist in reduction duties, and document snow observations.
  • Complete lists, forms, and reports for incidents and activities that may require an accident investigation.
  • Attend all required trainings and meetings.
  • Assist with incident prevention and response during Nordic Center events and races.
  • Capable of setting up a sled belay system and running it.
  • Familiar with the safe operation of snowmobiles or any other required machinery.
  • Familiar with and prepared to conduct basic to advanced Search and Rescue operations.
  • Assist mountain patrol with a chair lift evacuation by aiding in removing guests and recording their names, addresses, equipment, and location.
  • Assist mountain patrol as needed.
Secondary Function

Maintenance of the snowshoe trails by foot and maintenance of the ski trails via snowmobile grooming when needed.

Job Scope

The Nordic Patroller works independently to ensure the safety of guests as they recreate on 56 km of Nordic ski trails and 10 km of snowshoe trails. Together with the Nordic Trail Steward, the Nordic Patroller analyzes the daily conditions and grooming status to make decisions on required maintenance and guest communication.

The Nordic Patroller responds to guests in need of assistance, with assistance ranging in severity from a courtesy ride to an urgent medical incident. The position also requires oversight of up to 12 National Ski Patrollers (weekends and holidays only), which requires task assignment and training.

Specific Job Skills
  • License/Certifications: Current medical certificate (EMT, OEC, or WFR).
  • Technical: Computer skills, Emergency medical equipment, toboggans, ski equipment, shovels and various hand tools. Ropes, survival gear, explosives, radios and transceivers.
  • Physical Capabilities: Advanced skiing ability (Alpine and Nordic) and good physical condition. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extended periods in cold winter weather. Frequent shoveling, lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, and climbing. Additionally, every position at Mt. Bachelor requires the ability to shovel snow and walk on steep and uneven surfaces.
