Job summary

Roessel Joy seeks a Director of Finance for a well-established nonprofit in the Greater Boston area. This hands-on leader will run the accounting function, oversee the Controller and staff, manage the close, tuition billing, payables, and the audit, and serve as the primary finance partner to leadership and the Board.

The role requires an active CPA, a Bachelor’s or Master’s in Accounting, and 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, with nonprofit or higher-education exposure preferred.

Qualifications

• Proven leadership of accounting teams in nonprofit settings.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP for nonprofits and fund accounting.
• Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables and financial modeling.
• Experience with charitable organizations or schools is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Manage daily accounting operations, including AP, AR, payroll, and general ledger maintenance.
• Partner with Controller to execute month-end and year-end close and reconcile bank, investment, and balance sheet accounts.
• Maintain nonprofit net asset accounting (restricted/unrestricted funds, endowment) with monthly budget updates.
• Oversee fixed asset accounting, including depreciation and capital projects.
• Lead implementation of new software to track endowment and restricted gifts and bridge SIS to financial reporting.
• Prepare monthly financial statements and variance reports for CFO, Head of School, and Board.
• Lead annual audit preparation as primary contact for external auditors; assist with Form 990 and other filings.
• Ensure GAAP compliance and non-profit accounting standards.
• Supervise student billing, including tuition and fees, and financial aid adjustments; manage payments and collections.
• Reconcile student billing sub-ledgers to GL monthly; supervise AP process and vendor payments modernization.
• Assist CFO with annual operating budget and long-range financial modeling.
• Supervise Controller and accounting staff; provide regular feedback and annual reviews; engage in school community events.
• Contribute to a culture of belonging, collaboration, and continuous learning.
