Job summary

Art Museum in Washington, DC seeks a full-time gallery manager to support the Executive Director and oversee daily gallery operations, research, and exhibitions. You will manage programs, create materials, and engage with members, donors, and artists to elevate the museum’s presence.

The role requires a 4-year art-related degree, 2+ years gallery experience, and strong communication skills; proficiency with MS Office and Adobe is preferred.

Qualifications

  • BA in Art, Art History or a related field required.
  • Minimum of two years of prior experience as art gallery manager or similar.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Keen attention to detail, accuracy, and problem-solving.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively across all levels of the Foundation.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff, arts professionals, artists, and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, coordinate multiple complex projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong sense of accountability for achieving strategic priorities and goals.
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency with Adobe platform highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in languages other than English highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Exhibitions, Installations, and Publications.
  • Assist with the research, planning, organization, and implementation of exhibitions and installations.
  • Research, draft, edit, and proofread interpretive materials, including image files, wall texts, extended object labels, blog posts, and website/app content.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining exhibition checklists, layouts, and graphics.
  • Support the preparation of reports, presentations, articles, lectures, and publications.
  • Serve as Secretary for Foundation board meetings and team meetings; take minutes.
  • Recruit and manage volunteers and/or interns.
  • Daily function of gallery (opening, closing, reception, etc.).
  • Public and Stakeholder Engagement: answer inquiries, conduct tours and talks, participate in programs.
  • Create collaborative networks and cross-institutional visibility.
  • Assist Executive Director in stewarding relationships with members, donors, artists, and audiences.
  • Assist with communications with colleagues, donors, and partners.
  • Help gather, draft, proofread copy for marketing and collateral materials.
  • Experience securing donations; writing grants is highly desirable.
  • Establish and maintain professional contacts within the arts community; stay current with scholarship.

  • Administrative and Logistical SupportEstablish and maintain professional contacts within the local, national, and international arts community while staying current with new scholarship and issues in the field.
  • Collaborate with marketing team for creation of social media and advertising.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
