The Southwest National Primate Research Center (SNPRC) at Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio, TX is seeking an enthusiastic, organized, and skilled person to coordinate, oversee, and document the socialization of nonhuman primates within the Behavioral Services group.

You will participate in independent or collaborative research on primate behavior, management, and related topics, and join a collaborative, dedicated behavioral team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in psychology, anthropology, biology, or related field required.
• Minimum of one year of applicable animal experience.
• Comfortable working with laboratory animals including nonhuman primates.
• Experience in primate behavior and/or socialization strongly preferred.
• Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. for short distances regularly.
• Comfortable working in environments with infectious agents and hazardous chemicals.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate a nonhuman primate socialization program, forming pairs and social groups.
• Plan, execute, monitor, and document socialization events.
• Maintain socialization records and summaries in a database.
• Prepare and present seminars on primate behavior to professionals.
• Stay current with primate behavior literature and management research.
• Contribute to research projects involving primate behavior and management.

The Southwest National Primate Research Center (SNPRC) at Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio, TX, is searching for an enthusiastic, organized, creative, and skilled person in the field of animal behavior. The candidate will be working as part of the Behavioral Services group to coordinate, oversee, execute, and document the socialization of nonhuman primates. The individual will participate in independent or collaborative research on primate behavior, management, and related topics, serve as a resource for the continuing education of other staff, and join an innovative, cooperative, and dedicated behavioral team.

The Role:

• Help coordinate a nonhuman primate socialization program, which includes the formation of pairs and social groups
• Work with other staff to plan, execute, monitor, and document nonhuman primate socialization events
• Maintain socialization records and associated summaries in a computerized database
• Prepare and present seminars for intramural and extramural professionals on topics related to primate behavior and socialization
• Keep current on literature regarding primate behavior and management
• Contribute to the literature by participating in research projects involving primate behavior, management, cognition, and related topics, to include project design, data collection, analyses, and/or dissemination
• Help refine methodologies relevant to primate socialization and other behavioral management activities
• Participate in journal/book club on topics related to primate behavior

Our Ideal Candidate:

• Bachelor’s degree in psychology, anthropology, biology, or related fields required
• A minimum of one year of applicable animal experience
• Comfortable working with laboratory animals including various nonhuman primates
• Experience in primate behavior and/or socialization strongly preferred
• Capacity to lift and carry 50 lbs. for short distances on a regular basis
• Comfortable working in environments where infectious agents may be present
• Comfortable working with hazardous chemicals including cleaning agents, standing or walking for prolonged periods, pulling and holding overhead cables, or climbing ladders
• Enthusiasm for primate behavior, and its study
