Job summary

Oceaneering is seeking an NDE Engineer to support NASA on the JETS II contract. The role covers metallic, nonmetallic, and composite materials and involves preparing, evaluating, and conducting NDE activities with a focus on laboratory operations and problem resolution.

Job description

Overview

Oceaneering is seeking a Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Engineer to support NASA as an Oceaneering teammate on the JSC Engineering, Technology, and Science (JETS) II contract. The role supports the Materials Analysis section within the Engineering Department and contributes to human spaceflight and deep-space exploration programs. The NDE Engineer is responsible for preparing, assessing, and conducting nondestructive evaluation activities across metallic, nonmetallic, and composite materials while supporting laboratory operations, inspection development, and technical problem resolution. The position may be hired at various levels within the professional career framework depending on business needs.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare, review, and assess NDE requirements, plans, procedures, and reports covering metallic, nonmetallic, and composite materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Plan, review, assess, and conduct probability of detection (POD) capability demonstrations and inspection procedure qualification tests.
  • Analyze and resolve NDE issues and support corrective actions.
  • Recommend NDE methods, techniques, physical reference standards, and qualification tests.
  • Prepare and present NDE activity reports for project and program meetings.
  • Plan, conduct, and report inspections supporting procedure development, hardware failure investigations, and problem resolution.
  • Support NDE laboratory operations and maintenance through recommendations for equipment acquisition and retirement.
  • Represent NASA NDE and Materials & Processes engineering at government and industry technical forums, working groups, and conferences as required.
  • Support inspection activities involving fluorescent penetrant, eddy current, eddy current array, ultrasonic, phased array, EMAT, film/computed/digital radiography, computed tomography, laser shearography, infrared thermography, inspection automation, and machine learning applications.
  • Travel occasionally as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, or a related field from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Hands-on NDE experience through internships, coursework, and/or a minimum of one year of direct experience.
  • Formal education in NDE is desirable but not required if professional NDE training and experience have been obtained.
  • Previous experience supporting NDE development, test, and evaluation activities for NASA and/or aerospace projects is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. preferred.
  • 5–10 years of NDE experience preferred.
  • ASNT Level 3 certification is favorable but not required.
  • Experience with NDE simulation software such as CIVA and ESBeamTool and POD software such as mh1823.
  • Familiarity with metallic and nonmetallic materials and manufacturing processes including welding, additive manufacturing, composite fabrication, and repair.
  • Basic understanding of NDE procedure assessment, development, and problem solving.
  • Familiarity with common NDE techniques including fluorescent penetrant, eddy current, phased array ultrasonic, radiography, computed tomography, laser shearography, infrared thermography, and inspection automation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard desktop software applications.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Hands-on NDE experience through internships, coursework, and/or at least one year of direct experience.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residency.
  • Ability to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Ability to work in environmentally controlled indoor conditions and occasionally support indoor or outdoor tasks as required.
  • Ability to work in close physical proximity to other personnel.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • 9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off) may be available.
  • One day of telework per week may be available.
