Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.

Description

LOCATION: 2855 Gramercy St. Houston, TX 77025. Some travel to other nearby Houston Eye locations required as needed.

Position Summary

Contributes to the organization by working closely with the ophthalmologist to perform basic, advanced, and complex preliminary tests and measurements of the eyes. The OA generally meets with the patient before the Ophthalmologist to obtain medical history and prepare the patient for the examination.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Responsible for properly stocking, preparing, and maintaining the cleanliness of exam rooms during clinic.
  2. Reviews patient chart for accuracy of information.
  3. Prepares patients for physicians' exams. Performs tests based on the specific reasons for the visit and physicians' preferences.
  4. Assists with in-office procedures.
  5. Prepares and ensures all consent forms are complete and accurate prior to in-office procedures. Prepares and cleans room after procedures.
  6. Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
  7. May act as scribe to assist physicians with entering exam information into electronic records. Orders diagnostic tests electronically and submits prescription refills approved by the physician.
  8. Assists with preparing letters to patients and referring physicians.
  9. Assists with diagnostic testing and follows up on tests when directed by the physician.
  10. Schedules, reschedules, and cancels appointments.
  11. Assists in training other ophthalmic assistants.
  12. Adheres to HEA policies and procedures, upholds ethical principles, and maintains patient confidentiality. Complies with all State and Federal regulations.
  13. As a floater, travels between HEA locations to support staffing needs. Work location may be assigned at short notice.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned based on business needs.
Skills and Abilities

Includes visual assessment, visual field testing, pupil assessment, tonometry, keratometry, ocular motility testing, lensometry, refraction, retinoscopy, basic contact lens knowledge, ophthalmic coding, and scribing.

Supplemental Testing

May include BAT, slit lamp examination, pachymetry, tear osmolarity, Quickvue Adenovirus, InflammaDry, color vision, stereo vision, Maddox rod.

Additional Requirements

Ability to travel to different locations and departments as needed.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED preferred. Must have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 6 months of hire if not already certified. Uncertified Ophthalmic Assistants must obtain JCAHPO (COA, COT, or COMT) certification within 1 year. Minimum 1-2 years experience working with ophthalmologists. Bilingual a plus.
