The Department of Languages at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) invites applications for a Non-Tenure Track Term Assistant Professor of Languages with a specialty in German, French, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish. Teach engaging courses, including target language courses at all levels and culture/topic courses in English. Preference will be given to applicants who can teach a second language from either French, German, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish.

The Department of Languages offers a baccalaureate degree with a primary emphasis in German, Japanese, and Spanish and minor degrees in French, German, Japanese, Spanish, and Cultural Perspectives. Additionally, the department offers ASL and Russian language courses.

To thrive in this role, applicants should possess native or near-native proficiency in French, German, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish, as well as native or near-native proficiency in English; experience and readiness to participate in outreach and recruitment efforts in the school district and larger community; strong interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to teach core and specialized courses in the department’s curriculum; demonstrated potential to support and mentor students; a commitment to student success; and knowledge of innovative teaching practices.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD in language, literature, culture studies or closely related field by the time of appointment.

Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching at the college/university level.

Preferred Experience

Preference will be given to candidates with advanced proficiency in a second language (French, German, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish); evidence of effective teaching across modalities, including online or hybrid formats; experience with curriculum development, program assessment, or course design; familiarity with or experience in grant writing and project management; and experience teaching or working in an open-access, public university. Candidates should also have evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration or applied/community-engaged scholarship; experience or demonstrated potential in contributing to interdisciplinary programs; and knowledge of regional issues or communities relevant to the institution’s mission (e.g., Circumpolar North, Alaska Native communities, rural engagement).

Position Details

This position is located on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus in Anchorage, AK. This is a full-time, 9-month base, Non-Tenure Track, Term faculty position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package.
