Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or GED required; some college coursework or associate’s/bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Teaching license not required; must meet local/state non-certified substitute requirements.
• Experience: Prior work with children/youth in a school, camp, daycare, or community setting preferred.
• Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills; reliability and punctuality.

Responsibilities

• Implement lesson plans and instructional materials left by the classroom teacher, or create engaging lessons when plans are not available.
• Maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
• Establish and maintain effective classroom management and discipline procedures.
• Provide feedback to the regular teacher regarding student performance and behavior.
• Follow school policies, procedures, and routines with consistency and professionalism.
• Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests.
• Uphold the mission and values of Southern Avenue Charter School in all interactions with students, staff, and families.
• Communicate clearly and effectively with students, staff, and administrators.
• Supervise students in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, playground, or on field trips as assigned.
• Maintain confidentiality of student and school information.

Substitute teachers are vital members of our school community and help create a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
