Job description

ABOUT HUT 8

Imagine the ultimate destination for those who want to work at the cutting edge of technology, energy, and infrastructure. Hut8 is on a mission to build and operate some of the world’s largest data centers for next-generation computing workloads, including AI, Colocation, Cloud, and Bitcoin Mining. We are proud to offer interesting and challenging opportunities for individuals who want to build teams, solve problems, and make an impact from day one. If you’re an ambitious individual looking for a career that is as rewarding as it is challenging, you’ve come to the right place.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Imagine the ultimate destination for those who want to work at the cutting edge of technology, energy, and infrastructure. Hut 8 is on a mission to build and operate some of the world’s largest data centers for next-generation computing workloads, including AI, Colocation, Cloud, and Bitcoin Mining. We are proud to offer interesting and challenging opportunities for individuals who want to build teams, solve problems, and make an impact from day one.

The NOC Lead is the senior operational authority within our Network Operations Center. This is a hands‑on, working leadership role where you will operate "on the tools" alongside a NOC Engineer, own incident management, and build operational processes (runbooks, KPIs, change management) from the ground up.

A dominant project during your first year will be leading our strategic transition away from our current MSP, which will consume 50–60% of your focus in the first six months.

Team & Shift Structure
  • Tier 1 (First Response): TechOps Engineers handle after‑hours and weekend pages.

  • Tier 2 (Escalation): You and a NOC Engineer alternate weekly primary coverage. You only receive escalations if an issue exceeds Tier 1 scope (typically a 30‑minute time‑box).

  • Hours: Mon–Fri daytime (~08:00–18:00 MT/EST). After‑hours pager volume is low, averaging just 3–4 pages per week.

  • On‑call participation is compensated separately from base salary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Incident Management: Own all P1/P2 incidents from detection to resolution. Lead the bridge, drive stakeholder communications, and deliver full post‑incident reviews within 10 days.

  • Hands‑On Network Engineering: Serve as a working technical lead — directly configuring, testing, and validating changes on network devices alongside the NOC Engineer rather than delegating all implementation. Day‑to‑day hands‑on responsibilities include:
    • Router & WAN configuration: BGP/static routing, circuit turn‑up, WAN failover testing, and ISP escalations (AT&T, Rogers, TELUS, Starlink).
    • Firewall administration: FortiGate policy creation and auditing, NAT, IPS/IDS tuning, and HA failover configuration and validation.
    • Switching: VLAN and trunking configuration, STP, port‑channel/LAG setup, and L2/L3 routing on Cisco Nexus and ProCurve platforms.
    • Troubleshooting: CLI‑level fault isolation using packet capture tools (Wireshark, tcpdump), log analysis, and connectivity diagnostics across Layers 2–7.
    • VPN management: OpenVPN/IPsec site‑to‑site tunnel build‑out, monitoring, and incident response.
  • Infrastructure & Vendor Ownership: Maintain operational status across 8 remote sites (WAN, FortiGate firewalls, Cisco Nexus, GCP environment, NetBox IPAM, and monitoring stacks). Own ISP relationships and ensure Starlink tertiary backup readiness at all sites.

  • Governance: Enforce change management protocols (including freeze windows during Bitcoin halving and earnings events). Manage VPN access, network automation (Oxidized/Rundeck), and device licensing.

  • Leadership: Onboard, mentor, and run quarterly reviews for the NOC Engineer. Partner with the TechOps Manager to ensure smooth shift handovers via Jira.

What You Bring
  • 5+ years in network operations, NOC, or infrastructure engineering.

  • Proven Incident Leadership: Experience being the primary driver on the bridge during critical P1/P2 production events.

  • Technical Stack: hands‑on configuration and troubleshooting experience across:

    • FortiGate firewalls: policy management, NAT, IPS/IDS tuning, and HA failover.
    • Cisco Nexus/ProCurve switching: VLANs, STP, port‑channels, and L3 routing.
    • WAN circuits: circuit turn‑up, BGP peering, and failover testing.
    • OpenVPN/IPsec tunnel configuration and management.
    • Monitoring stacks: Zabbix, LibreNMS, Grafana, PagerDuty.
    • Packet capture and CLI diagnostics: Wireshark, tcpdump, and structured fault isolation.
  • Cloud & Systems: Working knowledge of GCP infrastructure and Terraform (IaC).

  • Process Builder: Highly desirable if you have prior experience with MSP transitions/in-housing or building NOC SOPs from scratch.

  • Attributes: Calm under pressure, highly communicative, and fiercely protective of team sustainability.

About the Work Environment
