Job description

STEM Learning Fellowship in Healthcare Data Analysis at NIH ODSS

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Data Science Strategy (ODSS) seeks recent post‑baccalaureates to participate in a hands‑on learning experience focused on healthcare data analysis and modeling. This fellowship offers practical experience in developing data standards, launching research initiatives, and exploring the role of clinical informatics in biomedical research.

Responsibilities
  • Develop foundational knowledge in clinical informatics, data access control, data standards, and interoperability concepts relevant to NIH programs.
  • Build skills in program analysis, project coordination, and tracking activities across clinical informatics and data science initiatives.
  • Conduct environmental scans and literature reviews, synthesizing findings into reports, presentations, and briefing materials.
  • Develop stakeholder engagement skills through interaction and communication across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strengthen understanding of how clinical, research, and operational data are used to inform biomedical research strategies and programmatic activities.

Location

Fellows may work in‑person or remotely. In‑person location is Bethesda, MD.

Appointment Length

One year, renewable annually for up to four additional years, contingent on availability of funds.

Selection Timeline

Initial review of applications will occur on July 1, 2026, with rolling reviews thereafter throughout the 2026 calendar year.

Nature of the Appointment

This program is managed by ORAU through a contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). Participants do not become employees of NIH, DOE, ORISE, or ORAU, and there are no employment‑related benefits.

Qualifications and Eligibility

A qualified candidate must be 18 years or older, hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field received within the last five years, and be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or foreign national with an acceptable immigration status. Current graduate students nearing degree completion may apply if they complete the degree by the fellowship start date.
