The Lead operates within the direction and authority of the Powder Coating Supervisor and escalates issues that require management action.

Requirements
Core Responsibilities
  • Coordinate daily work assignments for preparation, cleaning, masking, racking, coating, curing, inspection, packaging, and movement of finished parts.
  • Translate the shift plan and department priorities into clear tasks, sequence work appropriately, and communicate changes to the team.
  • Monitor work in progress and promptly communicate shortages, delays, equipment issues, quality concerns, and priority changes to the Supervisor.
  • Perform or verify required preparation, masking, racking, coating, curing, inspection, and packaging steps according to work orders and specifications.
  • Check that parts are correctly identified, staged, protected, and tracked throughout the coating process.
  • Support consistent color, finish, cure, coverage, and appearance requirements; identify defects and prevent questionable parts from moving forward.
  • Assist with first-level response to booth, oven, conveyor, gun, reclaim, ventilation, and related equipment issues; expedite maintenance needs when required.
  • Maintain orderly work areas, rack organization, paperwork, visual controls, housekeeping, and material flow throughout the shift.
  • Provide hands-on training, coaching, and cross-training to team members while reinforcing department expectations and standard work.
  • Complete accurate shift handoffs, including status of work, unfinished priorities, quality concerns, material needs, equipment issues, and follow-up items.
  • Support part tracking, rack identification, production reporting, and other systems used by the department.
  • Promote professional communication, teamwork, accountability, and cooperation between shifts and departments.
Safety and Compliance
  • Follow and reinforce company safety rules, PPE, hazard communication, chemical handling, housekeeping, lockout/tagout, and safe equipment-operation practices.
  • Confirm that team members understand assigned work and use equipment and PPE properly; immediately address or report unsafe conditions and behaviors.
  • Stop or hold work when a safety or quality risk exists and notify the Supervisor.
  • Maintain awareness of powder, chemical, heat, lifting, forklift, compressed-air, noise, and ventilation hazards.
  • Support inspections, incident investigations, corrective actions, and applicable company, OSHA, environmental, and fire-safety requirements
Authority and Accountability
  • Direct daily activities of assigned team members within priorities and procedures established by the Supervisor.
  • Rearrange routine work assignments to maintain flow and respond to immediate production needs, while communicating significant changes to the Supervisor.
  • Hold work when safety, quality, identification, or process requirements are not met.
  • Provide timely feedback regarding attendance, performance, training needs, conduct, productivity, quality, housekeeping, and follow-through.
  • Escalate staffing, material, maintenance, quality, schedule, capacity, and employee-relations issues through the chain of command.
  • The Lead does not independently approve discipline, change department-wide priorities, authorize significant process changes, or commit the company to purchases or outside services unless specifically authorized.
Performance Measures
  • Completion of assigned shift priorities and consistent department flow
  • First-pass quality, defect identification, reduced rework, and consistent coating results
  • Accurate part identification, tracking, staging, documentation, and shift handoffs
  • Safety performance, housekeeping, PPE compliance, and timely hazard reporting
  • Productive labor utilization, downtime response, and effective task direction
  • Team development, cross-training, professional communication, and follow-through
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; relevant manufacturing experience may substitute.
  • One or more years of experience in powder coating, industrial finishing, fabrication, manufacturing, or related production preferred.
