Job summary

West Virginia University Health System in Morgantown, WV is seeking a phlebotomist to perform timely blood collection for inpatients and outpatients in a hospital setting. The role follows established laboratory guidelines to obtain acceptable specimens used in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

The successful candidate will have completed a phlebotomy education program or allied health program with phlebotomy training, and may have certification by AMT, NCA, or ASCP.

Qualifications

• Completion of a phlebotomy education program or allied health education program that includes phlebotomy education and a minimum of 50 successful unaided venipunctures.
• Preference given to candidates certified as phlebotomist by AMT, NCA or ASCP.
• Consideration of NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program.
• Experience in hospital or clinic phlebotomy settings.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood collection per institutional guidelines to obtain diagnostic/therapeutic specimens.
• Follow standard operating procedures to ensure accurate results.
• Operate basic lab equipment (centrifuges, LIS, tube transport system).
• Restock supplies and support co-workers to ensure efficient workflow.
• Communicate patient care requirements across age groups as required by SOPs.
• Maintain accurate and timely computer entry of orders and specimens.
• Assist in education/training of staff and students as needed.
