Job summary

Balchem in Minnesota is seeking a Quality Assurance Technician to perform physical and chemical analysis on raw materials and finished products, under the direction of QA leadership. The role emphasizes accuracy, reliability, and timely reporting within GMP guidelines.

The ideal candidate will conduct standardized analyses, document results, and support laboratory and plant QA activities, including sample collection, data entry, and adherence to safety procedures in a dynamic manufacturing

Qualifications

• Must have completed GMP training and follow all mandates.
• Lab performance evaluated annually and tests must be accurate.
• Duties executed in a timely manner to provide rapid feedback to production.
• Ability to apply commonsense understanding to written, oral or diagram instructions.
• Must be able to work independently and manage workload.

Responsibilities

• Collects samples for analysis and distributes them appropriately.
• Performs chemical and physical analysis on product, ingredient and control samples.
• Records all product analysis according to laboratory protocols; data entry into computer system.
• Communicates effectively all critical information regarding analysis and test results; handwriting must be legible.
• Cleans and maintains all equipment/materials; cleans lab area at end of shift.
• Follows all laboratory and plant GMP and safety procedures.
• Provides written reports when requested by QA Manager/QA Leader.
• May perform environment sampling and pest control tasks as needed.
• Covers lab responsibilities during QA Leader absence.
• Performs other duties as requested by management.

Performs physical and chemical analysis on raw materials and food products from various stages of the manufacturing process, as directed by the Quality Assurance Manager and QA Leader. Accuracy, reliability, and expediency are essential to successful completion of the duties of a Quality Assurance Technician.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Collects samples for analysis and distributes them appropriately
• Performs chemical and physical analysis (including flavor checks) on product, ingredient and control samples according to laboratory procedures; needs to understand the concepts of each analysis, anticipate the result and follow through on any deviation
• Records all product analysis according to laboratory protocols including data entry on a computer system; falsifying a QC record will result in disciplinary action
• Communicates effectively all critical information regarding analysis, procedures, and test results; handwriting must be clearly legible
• Must clean and maintain all equipment/materials used; cleans up the lab area at the end of shift
• Follows all laboratory and plant GMP and safety procedures according to company guidelines
• Provides written reports when requested by Quality Assurance Manager and/or QA Leader
• General plant QA responsibilities may include (but are not limited to): collection and distribution of product and ingredient samples, collection of environmental samples, maintaining insect lights and pest boxes
• Covers all lab responsibilities during the absence of the Quality Assurance Leader
• Performs all other duties as requested by management staff

REQUIREMENTS

• After completion of four weeks training, must be able to perform all procedures accurately, precisely, and efficiently; results must be accurate; not adhering to the accuracy limits outlined in Diehl SOPs (existing, new and any subsequent revision) will result in dismissal from this position
• Required to have attended Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) training and follow all mandates
• Lab performance will be evaluated on an annual basis; it is essential that all tests be run correctly and accurately
• Duties must be executed in a timely manner, so production personnel receive rapid feedback on product quality; failure to complete tasks correctly and on time will result in dismissal from this position.
• Must possess ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
• Must be able to work independently – to organize tasks and manage the workload
• Must possess ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations
• Must be able to do mathematical calculations

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Must be able to work on their feet for extended periods of time
• Will be required to lift and carry large boxes full of samples up several flights of stairs and throughout the plant
• The plant environment involves working in noisy, wet, slippery and hot conditions
• Will be working with hazardous chemicals
• Hours as needed by the company
• The laboratory will be staffed on off shifts and weekend/holiday hours may be required due to the variable nature of our business
