Job summary

UPMC St. Margaret is seeking a Night Program Phlebotomist to join our laboratory team. This role requires at least one year of phlebotomy experience beyond school and night shift experience.

Responsibilities include obtaining blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick, following patient identification procedures, training new staff, and ensuring safe, accurate specimen handling. The position may involve off-site collections and requires excellent teamwork.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 1 year phlebotomy experience beyond school.
• Previous night shift experience preferred.
• Inpatient hospital phlebotomy experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Interact with laboratory customers courteously and respond to telephone inquiries.
• Obtain blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick following patient ID procedures.
• Train and orient new employees and students as assigned.
• Notify technical staff and pathologists of any unusual incidents.
• May perform arterial puncture following strict collection guidelines.
• Monitor supplies and use reagents cost-effectively.

Looking for a night shift opportunity where your work makes a direct impact on patient care? UPMC St. Margaret is seeking an experienced Night Program Phlebotomist to join our laboratory team.

We're looking for reliable, team-oriented professionals with at least one year of phlebotomy experience beyond school and previous night shift experience. Inpatient hospital phlebotomy experience is a plus. Join a department known for its supportive, non-punitive culture and commitment to excellence.

Schedule:

• Full-time nights
• 8:00 PM to 4:30 AM or 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM
• Monday through Friday with every other weekend required
• Two holidays per year (rotating schedule)
• $3.10 per hour night program differential
• No travel or floating required

Responsibilities:

• Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; responds to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
• Following proper patient identification procedures, procures appropriate blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick. As required, instructs patients on the collection procedures for laboratory specimens that are obtained by the patient, and may collect samples other than blood.
• Demonstrates dependability, reliability, and independent judgment recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.
• Specimen collection may be performed at off-site locations. Transports specimens from on- and off-site collection areas to the appropriate section of the laboratory following established safety procedures.
• Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, including hand hygiene techniques and proper isolation precautions., compliance and personnel policies.
• As required, performs related clerical duties, and utilizes various computer functions to accurately enter demographic information into the information system(s), enters test orders, receives, cancels, charges, and credits tests, while ascertaining adequacy of patient information as well as sample identity.
• Trains and orients new employees, students and residents, as applicable and as assigned.
• Inform technical staff, supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
• May also perform arterial puncture following strict collection and post collection guidelines .
• Monitors and maintains supplies for those functions for which the position is responsible; uses materials and reagents in a cost-effective manner.
