Job summary

Recovery Network Of Programs in Bridgeport, CT is seeking a night-shift Residential Counselor to ensure safety and provide support for clients at Tina Klem Serenity House. You will perform rounds, document events, and assist with daily routines throughout the overnight hours.

  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of basic counseling skills, crisis intervention and documentation.
  • Understanding of the physical, psychological, social and economic effects of substance abuse, homelessness, medical and mental health disorders.
  • Considerable knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations regarding client confidentiality.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative professional relationships with clients, colleagues and supervisors.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to project a professional image.
  • Must be able to walk up stairs.
  • Must be able to lift 10 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Remain awake and alert at all times to ensure safety and security of person served and building.
  • Utilise appropriate methods of effective night monitoring, including rounds and hourly walk-throughs, and document findings.
  • Complete head counts and confirm in accordance with the current census.
  • Acknowledge and document all behavior(s) on the part of any person served that is considered inappropriate or a cause for concern.
  • Redirect any person served in a respectful and appropriate manner and offer supportive counseling as needed.
  • Utilise crisis intervention techniques & contingency plans based on person served need and staff assessment.
  • Document significant medical, psychological, and social issues in client charts and shift rapport communication issues in the log.
  • Submit timely incident reports as established by policies and procedures.
  • Attend weekly team meetings and participate in training to stay current with DMHAS requirements.
  • Collaborate with community service providers and oversee safety compliance.
  • Assist with chart audits, archiving discharged charts, and administrative duties.
  • Oversee safety and program operations during night hours.
  • Provide hourly rounds and wake clients for morning routines.
  • Assist with breakfast oversight and daily activity planning.
  • Order supplies and maintain basic records as needed.

SUMMARY: In accordance with RNP's Mission Statement, Philosophy of Client Care and Code of Ethics as stated in the Personnel Policies and under the supervision of

HOURS

Saturday - Sunday 12:00 am - 8:00 am

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Remain awake and alert at all times to ensure safety and security of person served and building.
  • Utilise appropriate methods of effective night monitoring, which include rounds and walk-throughs of the building hourly, and document findings.
  • Complete head counts and confirm in accordance with the current census.
  • Acknowledge and document all behavior(s) on the part of any person served that is considered inappropriate or a cause for concern.
  • Attempt to redirect any person served in a respectful and appropriate manner as needed and offer supportive counseling as deemed necessary.
  • Utilise crisis intervention techniques & contingency plans whenever necessary based on person served need and staff assessment.
  • Document significant medical, psychological, and social issues in client charts and shift rapport communication issues in Communication Log.
  • Submit timely incident reports as established by RNP Policies and Procedures.
  • Participate in personal and professional training and development activities to remain current with stands set forth by Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services for psychiatric rehabilitation facilities.
  • Collaborate with other community service providers.
  • Attend weekly team meetings.
  • Assume all other appropriate duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum of an associate’s degree in behavioral health and at least two (2) years’ experience in related field preferred with clients with co-occurring disorders; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Incumbents may be encouraged to secure professional certification (e.g. CAC and/or SCCD).
  • A valid CT driver's license required.
