Night Maintenance Technician: $33-39/hr -DIRECT HIRE
Job Description

The Night Maintenance Technician maintains and repairs manufacturing equipment used to produce plastic packaging bags, with a strong focus on both mechanical and electrical troubleshooting. Working primarily on blown film and other plastic processing equipment, this role performs a balance of mechanical and electrical diagnostics, including PLC-related work, and carries out both preventive and reactive maintenance. The technician documents all maintenance activities in the work order system and supports production by keeping equipment safe, reliable, and operating at optimal performance during night shifts.

Responsibilities
  • Work efficiently with the Maintenance Coordinator to manage spare parts, including establishing and maintaining minimum and reorder levels, organizing the parts crib, and ensuring accurate preventive maintenance documentation and part purchasing.

  • Approve and complete preventive maintenance activities by accurately filling out work orders, attaching parts used, updating maintenance records, and properly closing work orders in the system.

  • Provide equipment training to operators when needed to promote proper use, basic troubleshooting, and care of machinery.

  • Ensure that equipment drawings, programs, and manuals are accurate, complete, and readily available for maintenance and operations personnel.

  • Communicate effectively with affected associates so they understand the work being performed and ensure that all team members work safely together during maintenance activities.

  • Identify opportunities for improvement in equipment reliability, safety, and performance, and collaborate with management and the safety committee to plan and execute improvement projects.

  • Apply mechanical knowledge and math formulas to calculate forces and adjust gear and drive ratios to properly size components and optimize machine performance.

  • Analyze equipment problems to determine the root cause of failure and develop permanent solutions rather than temporary fixes.

  • Read and interpret ladder logic symbols, basic power and control logic flow, electrical symbols and notation, and understand normally open versus normally closed contacts.

  • Use electrical schematics to troubleshoot, repair, modify, and upgrade circuits in a safe and effective manner.

  • Apply a solid understanding of PID control concepts, including proportional, integral, and derivative functions, and make appropriate adjustments to PID loops while understanding the impact of these changes on process control.

  • Perform ampacity calculations to select appropriate wire sizing for electrical circuits and equipment.

  • Select suitable overcurrent protection devices, power supplies, contactors, and related electrical components based on system requirements and safety standards.

  • Recognize and account for the effects of heat on electrical and mechanical systems, including components, wiring, and controls.

  • Use basic electrical knowledge, tools, and concepts to troubleshoot circuits with instruments such as digital volt-ohm meters, ammeters, and phase sequence testers.

  • Troubleshoot equipment and systems in a consistent, logical, and methodical manner to determine the true root cause of failures before replacing components.

  • Physically read and interpret input and output signals, including digital, analog, and temperature (thermocouple) inputs, to diagnose control system issues.

  • Understand the differences between milliamps, current, and voltage as they relate to PLC analog input and output signals, and apply this knowledge when troubleshooting and configuring PLCs.

  • Connect to various PLC platforms, go online, read register data, force I/O, upload and download programs, reassign I/O, and make basic program modifications as needed for maintenance and optimization.

  • Apply knowledge of drive and motor operation, including mechanical starters, single-phase motor operation, three-phase motor operation, overloads, and single phasing, to diagnose and correct motor-related issues.

  • Understand the theory of DC motors and drives, including the difference between armature and field circuits, the functions of speed reference, armature versus tach feedback, and drive adjustments such as current limit and minimum and maximum speed settings, as well as differences between permanent magnet and separately energized fields.

  • Set up new analog or digital DC drives for basic operation, including configuring parameters and verifying correct performance.

  • Set up new AC variable frequency drives (VFDs) for basic applications, selecting appropriate control methods and applying them to meet process and equipment requirements.

  • Apply a basic understanding of speed reference, encoder feedback, and frequency control in configuring and troubleshooting drive systems.

  • Interpret basic hydraulic and pneumatic schematics and symbols to understand system design and operation.

  • Identify and explain how individual hydraulic and pneumatic components work together as a complete system, including valves, cylinders, pumps, and actuators.

  • Use fundamental hydraulic and pneumatic knowledge to troubleshoot issues such as leaks, worn parts, and malfunctioning components, and perform repairs or replacements as necessary.

  • Demonstrate superior workmanship in all maintenance tasks, setting a high standard of quality for fellow associates and contributing to a culture of excellence.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management to support maintenance operations and overall plant performance.

Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 5 years of industrial equipment maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Two-year technical degree in a relevant field such as industrial maintenance, electronics, or a closely related discipline.

  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills, with approximately 50/50 focus across both disciplines.

  • Experience working with plastic processing equipment; blown film background is preferred but not required.

  • Hands‑on PLC programming and troubleshooting abilities, including connecting to PLCs, reading and modifying programs, and working with I/O.

  • Proficient knowledge of AC and DC drive troubleshooting down to the board level.

  • Solid understanding of mechanical systems, electrical circuits, blueprint reading, hydraulics, and pneumatics.

  • Ability to read and interpret ladder logic, electrical schematics, hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams, and technical documentation.

  • Competence in performing calculations related to force, gear and drive ratios, ampacity, and other maintenance‑related engineering concepts.

  • Experience using maintenance‑specific software such as Epicor or similar computerized maintenance management systems.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with maintenance staff, operators, and management.

  • Ability to work 12‑hour night shifts (6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) on an alternating schedule of 23 days.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in plastic manufacturing, particularly with blown film processes and plastic packaging production.

  • background in maintenance supervision or leadership, with the ability to set standards for workmanship and guide others.

  • Familiarity with troubleshooting and repairing a wide range of industrial equipment, including drives, motors, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

  • Capability to provide on‑the‑job training to operators on equipment use and basic troubleshooting.

  • Comfort working with digital volt‑ohm meters, ammeters, phase sequence testers, and other standard maintenance tools.

  • Ability to plan and support improvement projects in collaboration with management and safety teams.

  • Direct hire or contract‑to‑hire engagement options, offering flexibility in how candidates join the organization.

  • Interest in contributing to a growing company and supporting ongoing expansion and investment in new equipment and facilities.
