Job Title: Custodian (Day/Night)

Summary
To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
- Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
- Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are able to be opened from the inside and all panic bots are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
- Maintain lunchroom for meals. Sweep and mop floors, disinfect tables between shifts and other responsibilities as assigned by the principal. (day)
- Sweep classrooms daily and dust furniture. (night)
- Clean corridors after school each day (night), or during the day as warranted. (day)
- Scrub, hose down, and disinfect toilets and floors daily, and clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
- Wash all windows on both inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary.
- Keep the grounds free from rubbish.
- Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
- Clean all chalkboards and/or whiteboards at least once a week.
- Make such minor building repairs as he/she is capable of.
- Report major repairs needed promptly to the principal.
- Report immediately to the principal any damage to school property.
- Remain on the school premises during school hours, and during non‑school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and attendance is required by the principal.
- Assume responsibility for opening or closing of the building each school day, ensuring doors are secure for student safety after all students have arrived and that all doors, windows, and lights are secured before leaving.
- Maintain an inventory of supplies, equipment and requisitions and deliver replacements in a timely manner.
- Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
- Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal.
- Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
- Perform tasks of summer cleanup such as stripping and waxing floors and preparing classrooms for the new year.
- Conduct periodic inspections and tests of all electrical installations in the school to ensure safe condition.
- Snow removal is required during the winter season.
- Hours will change during summer months. When school is out of session night custodian’s hours will change to daytime.
- May be required to come in and fill in the absence of a day custodian as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
Education/Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Demonstrate aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Skills and Abilities
Language – Ability to read and interpret documents, write routine reports, respond appropriately to staff requests.
Computation – Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using weight, volume, and distance units of measurement.
Reasoning – Ability to comprehend and follow basic written and verbal instruction and solve practical problems.
Technology – Basic computer skills required.
Additional Skills and Abilities – Maintain a neat appearance, good hygiene, well‑groomed. Keep uniforms clean and free of damages. Maintain pleasant attitude with students, parents, staff. Maintain confidentiality when required. Able to multi‑task in a sometimes chaotic environment.
Physical Demands
Move constantly throughout building and grounds; reach, climb, stoop, bend, kneel, twist, or sit. Frequently push or pull items such as tables and equipment. Ability to speak and hear in high and low noise levels. Regularly lift objects up to 50 pounds, occasionally up to 100 pounds.
Attendance – Good attendance is essential.
Conditions and Environment
Work primarily indoors, occasionally outdoors. Work near or with moving mechanical equipment. May occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals. Often work alone and occasionally irregular or extended hours. Moderate risk of exposure to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students. Noise level usually low, occasionally loud.
Terms of Employment
12 months. Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
Evaluation
Performance evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board Policy on Evaluation of Support Staff.
