Job description

The Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University invites applications for a full-time, visiting professor (rank to be determined) to be appointed for the 2024-2025 academic year, which may be renewable during the following academic year.


As the Newsday/David Laventhol Visiting Professor, the incumbent will stress diversity in media issues, contribute to the Master of Science program, which may include teaching a foundational Reporting or Writing course, a course in data or video journalism and/or a seminar in their specialty area, supervising masters' projects, and advising students. They may also contribute to the Master of Arts program as well as the data degree and dual degree journalism and computer science programs.


The incumbent should have a substantial publishing record as well as experience as a teacher, writer and editor. Demonstrated experience with video journalism or qualitative and quantitative reporting, including but not limited to methods in data collection, analysis and visualization, is preferred. The School embraces diversity and seeks candidates with the ability to work with and attract dynamic and diverse groups of faculty, staff and students.


To qualify for this visiting professorship the candidate must currently hold an appointment at another academic institution. A bachelor's degree is required; advanced degree preferred.


This visiting professorship will begin no earlier than July 1, 2024, pending administrative approval.
