Job description

The Citizen is seeking a full-time reporter to join its award-winning staff in Auburn. This position is a general assignment news reporter who will work up to 40 hours a week covering primarily local government (towns and villages), as well as some spot news and human interest stories. Ability to cover high school sports is a bonus. Some proficiency at taking photos and videos with a smartphone and posting on social media is expected.

The Citizen, located in Auburn, is a newspaper in Cayuga County. We print three times a week, but our first priority is covering news and generating stories for our website, auburnpub.com. Along with Auburn we cover all the towns and villages of Cayuga County, which lies between Syracuse, Rochester and Ithaca. We also cover some towns and villages immediately outside the county, such as the lakeside village of Skaneateles.

Our ideal candidate will bring some storytelling experience and enthusiasm for small-town journalism to The Citizen. Preferred workdays for this position will be Sundays through Thursdays, though Mondays through Fridays are a possibility. The reporter can work remotely or in our new office in Auburn, but town and village coverage will require some proximity to the area. Assignments will mostly come from our editors at first, and as the reporter eases into the community it is hoped they will also be able to generate story ideas themselves.

A bachelor's degree in journalism and/or some experience at a journalistic publication is preferred. Along with your resume, please include a cover letter, at least three published clips and three professional references.
