This position is in the Public Health Laboratory's Newborn Screening program area located at 8231 Parklane Rd, Columbia, SC 29203.

Responsibilities:

  1. Utilize methodologies including Iso-electric focusing, HPLC, tandem Mass Spectrometry, PCR, and automated analyzers.
  2. Perform required maintenance on laboratory instrumentation, both scheduled and as needed.
  3. Troubleshoot problems as they arise.
  4. Conduct quality control as required and review quality control for acceptability.
  5. Prepare various reagents needed for testing specimens.
  6. Accurately review and report patient test results and communicate abnormal test results according to approved laboratory procedures.
  7. Work both independently and as part of a team.
  8. Participate in quality assurance activities within the laboratory.

State Minimum Requirements: A bachelor's degree in a related medical or scientific discipline; or an associate degree or equivalent training in a related medical, scientific or technical discipline and journey-level work experience in a related field.

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Agency Additional Requirements: A bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; or an associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution. Must be able to work rotating Saturdays and holidays.

A Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) degree with American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification, and at least one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience; or a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) degree with ASCP certification and at least one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience.

DRIVING RECORD: If this position requires the applicant to possess a valid driver’s license to operate a state vehicle or personal vehicle, any applicant being considered in the final stages of selection for the position will be required to provide a certified copy of a 10-year driving record.
